The Fairmont Winnipeg is an excellent property at the corner of Portage and Main. It is centrally located relative to the MTS Center and the Concert Hall. The staff were friendly and helpful and the pool is a salt water delight. But getting around on foot is a challenge. The City Fathers have decided that pedestrians cannot be trusted to cross the street, so you are forced to either walk out of your way in a seedy part of town or enter an underground maze with very poor signage that also assumes that the directions NSEW are useless but "Richardson Tower" is. Totally stupid. If you stay at the Delta up the street much of this is avoided. But be prepared for drunks, take-downs, and 24 hr police sirens wherever you stay in downtown Winnipeg. It is not the murder capital of Canada for nothing. You may also wish to pay the premium for valet parking, there are a large number of smash and grabs in downtown WPG, and the attention given to your vehicle by the staff may save you a headache.
