“Magnificent Sunday brunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

This grand historic hotel in Winnipeg continues to provide memorable
high quality experiences for its guests. The delightful and impressive entry into the hotel with the opulent spacious public rooms is wonderful and unique. Take some time to enjoy the details! The most memorable moment however, for us was the truly magnificent Sunday brunch. It stands up to its reputation as a very special feast in a very special setting. Get a reservation for late morning or early afternoon seating and get ready for a most memorable meal. The variety is amazing. The desserts are almost frightening, especially if you add the home made ice cream. The high quality of the main selections often include local meats, wild salmon and other seafood. We enjoyed some of the various organic choices. If you are a coffee lover, ask for the fair trade, organic French press dark roast coffee to finish off this feast. It is truly a meal fit for royalty! The fine service was a bonus. Oh yes, the hotel was very good too.

Room Tip: If you wish to experience this grand place on a holiday weekend book early!

Stayed for one-night in a king room and was impressed by the room's size and very comfortable bed and furnishings. Quiet, elegant and well-appointed. Make sure you stop off in the Palm Room for a drink. Location was fantastic as we walked behind the hotel to the river-walk, under the bridge then were at the Forks for dinner. Excellent breakfast the next morning. Would stay again.

I didn't stay at the hotel, I have been told that the rooms are a bit outdated but that the lobby makes up for it.
I loved the look of the whole place, from
outside to inside. I went on a Tuesday ti watch some live music. I had bonuses of who was playing or what they would be playing. Luckily there was an amazing pianist...I sat in a very comfortable chair and took it all in over a draft beer (no bottled beer unfortunately..), and an amazing steak. The steak was one of the specials, and I must admit I had a very hard time choosing what to get because there were so many great things on their menu. This was one of the best steaks I've had in a very long time. It was served with great tasting fries too. Prior to the actual meal, there was bread and butter. Two anazing kinds of bread, I couldn't get enough of it.
The service was over all great. The gentleman who brought me my menu and drink was very friendly and didn't mind answering any questions I had and was very helpful. Another man, who seemed to be the bus boy was also very helpful. The main waiter was not as friendly but wasn't rude either. He was not up to my standards for customer service, the rest was so great though that it didn't make too big of a deal.
I recommend the lounge to anyone who wants a relaxing evening. This was one of the best I'd had in a long time.

I've been to a few of the grand railway hotels (Frontenac, Royal York, Palliser), and this one is so far my favourite. The hotel walks a fine line between opulence and frugality... the common areas are beautiful, and the rooms are fine too (the bed is fantastic), yet it shows it's age in some respects. The room rate and free breakfast adds to the sense of value (full breakfast with a great omlette bar). Altogether not entirely perfect, but I hope this place doesn't change. 8/10

Spouse & I stayed here 2 nights - a week apart – one before a nature trip to Churchill the other on the return before flying home. Both were Saturday nights and the hotel was hosting multiple weddings – and thus it was crowded with lots of very dressed up people (not us, the nature tour group!!). Since we were with a tour group we did not have the “best” rooms but they were certainly fine – if a bit dated. In both the rooms we occupied lighting was limited to table lamps on bedside tables and a desk. In one room (337) the chair to sit in & read had no lighting behind it, making it not very useful. I must admit I did not request more lighting; if I were to stay longer than the one night, I would have. The rooms and the bathrooms were very clean, but there were some cracked tiles and what looked like peeling caulk with black (mold??) on it in Room 310 (if I remember the room number correctly). The bed was super comfortable as were the other amenities. There was no free wireless internet in the rooms (you had to pay) but there were two free computers in the lobby which we used to print our boarding passes. The first morning we had the chef-to-guest breakfast – and that was a good as it gets. Whatever you wanted (within reason of course) would be personally cooked for you. The second morning we had to leave for the airport before breakfast, but the front-desk staff called the hotel staff and they opened the Gift Shop for us, helped us make coffee/tea there and gave us several granolas bars to take on our trip. That was a great special service. So a nice historically interesting hotel with elegant lobby/bar area and great service

Older, charming hotel. Enjoyed the service and the classic feel of the place. No doubt one of the nicer established that I've stayed at in Winnipeg. While I very much enjoyed the Fort Garry, I would suggest that if you like modern and urbane, you should stay elsewhere. It was a close walk to the Fort Garry park, which offered a nice stroll by the river. It also was within easy walking distance of downtown. A classic hotel - they don't make them like this any more.

Over the past year i have stayed here 7-10 times. This old hotel has a lot of charm and the staff is good. Walking around the hotel, you can really appreciate the work that goes into maintaining a hotel of this age. The hotel rooms are comfortable and has everything you need, although the bathroom is looking dated and TV needs to be updated. The breakfast is the best anywhere, they will make anything (i asked for cooked spinach, onions & cube ham w/S&P, the cook said no problem).
My personal preference would be for the Fort Gary to upgrade the rooms like say the Banff Springs hotel where the building look is maintained but the guest rooms are modern.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view, the smaller rooms have a window looking out at a brick wall.
