“Cosy hotel in Churchill”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013

This hotel was perfect for a short stay in Churchill. The rooms were basic, but clean, with heating and the beds were comfortable. You don't need much more than that in a chilly little town in northern Canada! Breakfast was included in the cost of the room, and you could make your own waffles! Even though Churchill is very small, the Polar inn is still within walking distance (without freezing!) to all the main touristy shops/museums/restaurants.

Churchill is a tough place to live and work - with a few short weeks of intensive tourism activities so I'd expected a far worse accommodation. Then, most of our group ended up at the Tundra and 5 couples were displaced to the Polar so I'm thinking this will be really bad. Not! Our room was clean and the beds and bed-linens were amazing. I wish they had better towels but the shower was hot and the heat worked in the room so the tiny, rough towels didn't spoil our stay. Front desk woman was friendly & helpful. When we had to stay an extra night because of a blizzard, we were promptly back in rooms we'd checked out of 7 hours earlier.
If you need a 5-star hotel to be happy, don't go to Churchill. If you can live with some very "real" Canadian experiences and warm, clean, basic rooms - this is a just-fine place.

Room Tip: Farther from the Breakfast room is better - we were awakened at 6 each day as they began making the...

Spend four nights at the Polar Inn. The rooms were basic: cramped but clean with nice hot showers. The staff were friendly, but not very outgoing as previous reviews had noted. Next time in town, I think we would like to stay at the Seaport where under one roof, you can have your meals and drinks without going outside in the fridge weather.

Stayed here for five nights in early October and found it to be great in every way. The staff in particular were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean with everything we needed. We also liked the location. Will definitely recommend it to friends and family (and anyone else traveling to Churchill).

Room Tip: Rooms with kitchenettes are available - a great option for longer stays

I stayed here with 6 family members as part of a month long trip. Being the tundra, I wasn't sure what to expect when we arrived. But I was very impressed with the rooms. The beds were pretty comfortable and rooms had lots of storage space. There was a full fridge in the room and a little table. The showers were nice and warm, which was super important to my Florida blood. There was a large table in the common area and lots of games and books. Breakfast was served every morning, and the owner made some fabulous blueberry muffins that I really enjoyed. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. The day we left out train wasn't leaving until 7:30 pm and we were able to keep one of our four rooms for the rest of the day, for a really small fee. The hotel is close to everything, but really everything is close to everything. The town is very small and everything is close. It was a wonderful experience and if I ever find myself in Churchill again, I would absolutely stay here.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

I have traveled extensively and me and my wife have never received the level of service and friendliness that Louise and Dwight and there staff and family offered us. Our room was spacious, clean, modern and way better than I expected at this edge of the world hostile environment. Everything here comes in on a train or a plane. I watched the staff answer the exact same volley of questions from each new arrival with unbelievable patience and friendliness. Louise and the desk staff are incredibly and I mean incredibly patient and friendly. Continental breakfast was a little better than typical. Our room was by the front door but we had no noise issues. The Inn is 5 minutes from the train station but requires a cab from the little airport. They let us check in early after our long train ride. A CAUTION ON THE TRAIN. PAY THE EXTRA FOR A SLEEPER OR TAKE A PLANE! AIRFARE IS MORE BUT THE TRAIN RIDE IS BRUTAL. IT CREEPS DUE TO THE PERMAFROST AND ALSO HAS A LOT OF STOPS. SEATS ARE UNCOMFORTABLE AND THE SCENERY IS NOT THAT GREAT BETWEEN THOMPSON AND CHURCHILL. Only negative on our trip was the train. Dwight and Louise and family also own and operate Sea North tours. We took a competitors tour and then took 2 of Sea Norths' tours. We did the Sea North estuaries tour which got us right in the middle of literally 100's of Belugas and as an added bonus we got to see a mother and cub Polar bear that had arrived early and were waiting on the shore of the Hudson bay for the ice to form. The tour operator pulled the boat as close as he could without agitating the bears and I got some once in a lifetime pictures with a telephoto lens. We also did a hiking tour on the other side of the river with Parks Canada and Sea North that focused on plant and animal life as well as the early settlers and the Prince of Wales fortress. Both tours we booked with Louise were very informational as well as exciting and exceeded our expectations. Our tour with a competitor was good but definitely not on par with Sea North. I can not say enough good things about our experience with this family and staff. I have never been motivated to write a review in my past 30 years of international travel but they merit it. In Churchill the Parks Canada museum in the train station and the 1st Nation museum are both very good. The Arctic Char is excellent at the Lazy Bear Lodge.

We stayed at the Polar Inn in Churchill during July of 2013. The Polar Inn is an easy 5 minute walk from the train station and a short walk to attractions and restaurants. Our room was very clean and comfortable, with all the amenities you might need, including in-room coffee, fridge, cable TV, comfortable bedding. The continental breakfast was excellent, with plenty of hot waffles, coffee, juices, home-baked muffins, bagels.

Louise and the staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming. They were very knowledgeable about the area and things to see and do in Churchill, including being helpful with information regarding their competitors.

BONUS: We arrived in Churchill via the train at 9:00am and we were checked into our room for a much needed freshen-up following a long train ride. We even more appreciated the Polar Inn’s hospitality when we were checking out. The train was leaving Churchill several hours late at 3:00am and they let us stay in the room until it was time to leave for the train station.

In addition to providing great hotel accommodations, the Polar Inn also operates a tour company, Sea North Tours, for summer and winter activities. We were picked-up and returned at the entrance to the Polar Inn to participate in various activities – very convenient.

I would definitely recommend the Polar Inn for accommodations and Sea North Tours for tours.
