After being recommended to this restaurant, my fiancee and I were very excited to go and try somewhere outside the confines of the awful chain restaurants which seem dotted around north America. We promptly booked and were sharply answered via email confirming our reservation. Nice touch. As they seemed keen to communicate in this fashion, I requested that a small birthday cake be arranged, as it was my fiancee's birthday, which I stated that I would pay for.
The restaurant was nicely set out; traditional interior decor accompanied by a slim, yet attractive terrace. However, we were greeted by a hostess who seemed the least pleased to see us, and were promptly seated. The server took our drink request and food order. The server was pleasant and made some helpful recommendations. My fiancee opted for the house greens to start with. I chose to skip the starter course. The salad was horrendous, and no doubt straight from a bag. The beetroot was bland and tasteless; I've had better beetroot from a 'no frills' can. disappointing start.
On to the main; My partner had the chicken wrapped in prosciutto ham, stuffed with asiago cheese and spinach. I opted for the land and sea dish. The chicken was dry and flavorless, and the accompanying potatoes were nothing out of the ordinary. My dish was of a similar ilk; the crab cake was a huge disappointment; heavily breaded, clumsily flavored- tasted like a curry, and akin to a frozen fish cake. the confit garlic mashed potatoes were nothing more than school dinner mash, without a hint of the promised garlic flavor. However, the meal was partially redeemed by the grilled tenderloin, which was cooked to perfection.
After this very disappointing meal, we drank our champagne, made a joke about it and politely turned down the waitresses attempts at convincing us to have dessert. And, to add insult to injury, no birthday cake or even a birthday wish. Our meals and a bottle of Veuve including tax and a small tip (!) came to $200. We could have gone to Cactus club and had better for half the price.
