“Frat house with extra charges.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

Just got back from the Tantalus Lodge. When we first arrived we were greeted by dozens of semi-naked drunken college age kids, walking to our room we passed lots of loud parties. This certainly didn't look like the kind of place I would take a family to.

We stepped over a pile of nachos in the corridor floor. They were still there several hours later (albeit ground in from being trod on).

Charging for wi-fi is a bit mean these days. Come on, Starbucks, Super 8, Travel Lodge and even the top of the mountain has free wi-fi. Parking charges added salt to the wounds.

Finally the floors and walls are strangely warped and we were scared to go out on the creaky old balcony. Although we noticed mot of our neighbours were on their balconies ignoring the no smoking signs.

I guess if you want reasonable Whistler rates and to party with friends it could be fun. A relaxing weekend with the family.........forget about it.

Friendly staff and proximity to the ski hill were the positives.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am very sorry the actions of other guests hindered on us providing you with a enjoyable stay. I notice you mentioned a charge for WiFi, which I am surprised as Wifi is complimentary in all rooms.

I will be happy to discuss this in person. Below you will find my contact information.

We travelled with 2 boys aged 8 and 11. This accommodation was perfect. We were given a superior 2 bedroom suite. Having travelled from England with the time difference, and all day in the fresh air boarding and skiing the boys were exhausted every evening. It was therefore lovely to be able to cook and eat in a relaxed atmosphere at Tantalus. There is a full kitchen with oven, grill, 4 ring hob, microwave and dishwasher, huge fridge freezer, proper coffee machine, kettle and toaster. There were loads of pans and utensils, chopping board, cheese grater, bottle opener, knives, collindar, measuring jugs, etc everything you'd have indoors. I even baked brownies (used coffee filters as cake cases and made our own pancakes. There were washing up liquid, dishwasher powder, coffee filters there (not sure if supplied by Tantalus or previous guest) Tantalus do supply, tea bags, giant filter coffee bags, sugar, sweetener, coffee mate and salt and pepper. Bret (I think) on reception when we arrive at midnight after a really frought journey was very helpful. He gave us advice on places for breakfast and where to buy groceries. For what was a week's shop we went to the Market Place for the supermarket. We got a cab back for $7, (they line up outside). It cost us approx $150 for a regular week's shopping. Boys watched TV and fell asleep between 6.30-7.30 every night so fantastic to have separate bedrooms and living space! 2 bathrooms were also a god send. The boys loved the outdoor pool, and would have used the tennis court but the snow had only just cleared as we left.

It is about 4 minute walk to the Blackcomb Whistler, kids lessons drop off, or there is a shuttle bus (free).

Free wifi was great, we could email family photo postcards and check out information onine.

Staff were all friendly and helpful and reception was available 24/7.

We booked direct and from booking to leaving the Tantalus could not have been more friendly or helpful.

If (or when) we are back in Whistler we wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Room Tip: We were in room 501 which was on 4th floor but had stairs directly inside room door up to the full...

Booked online well in advance from Australia. Constant email communication was reassuring. Stay was excellent. Double room and 2 bathrooms was great. Being able to prepare our own meals a huge bonus (especially with the supermarket close by). Short sharp "hill" on the walk to and from the village a bit of a challenge when tired but the bus runs frequently. Loved it.

Room Tip: Didn't use these last 2 features.

The suite was great and the price was great but when we left 3 pairs of rather nice swimming shorts behind, the service was terrible. We called only a few hours after leaving to report the loss which began 3 days of repeated phone calls, visits, and getting blown off by front desk personnel who didn't seem to care at all. No shorts were "reported" by housekeeping or found by the laundry service which suggests to us that our clothing was stolen by whoever cleaned our room. The $70 Billabong shorts were probably the target. This kind of theft often occurs in Third World hotels but we were really surprised to find it in BC's "leading" resort. We won't be back.

Dear Guest,

We are very sorry we were not able to find the items left behind in your room. As you mentioned, we did do our due diligence by asking the Room Attendant, Laundry and inspecting our Lost and Found. Our Room Attendant team has been working with us for the past 10 to 27 years and we have been blessed by not having any theft in the rooms.

Sincerely,

This is my second time at Tantalus. Both times I booked a 2 bdrm suite. Great for families or groups of friends and for those wanting to make meals in the suite. Clean, quiet and having two bathrooms is a bonus. Walking distance from all the action in the village. Ski lock rentals can be borrowed with a refundable deposit and easy to access ski storage facilities. No time to hang out in the outdoor pool on this trip :o(

I was very happy with this hotel. We had a large group and had more than one room for a family reunion. The staff were very nice and it was really good value. This is especially true because of the kitchens, we ate out every night but we had breakfast in the rooms and were able to make our lunches. It also made it easier for snacks after skiing with the kids, since we seem to eat fairly late every night by ther time everyone gets back from the hill and has a hottub. It was very clean and quiet.

It is slightly outside the villiage, so may not be attractive to some who want to be in the thick of it but it was much quiter to be out of the central area in my opinion. It is an easy walk to the villiage in the evening. Also, there is a shuttle during the day, but it is an odd shuttle because it really just drives you down the street for about a minute. There is a drop off loop at the bottom of the gondola but it does not take you there, which would be far more convenient. Not sure what that was about, but it was stil helpful to have the shuttle.

My only big complaint is why why why do these style hotels have the cheapest possible coffee maker?! All hotels of this style seem to suffer from the same problem. I need coffee in the morning and to watch a coffee maker drip out like a leaky faucet is truly punishment after a few days skiing. Bring a Bodum.

Room Tip: Choose the back if you like quiet. There is nothing behind the hotel but trees. The front has an o...
