“Perfect Paring”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

We were visiting Victoria with friends from Vancouver. They suggested Restaurant Matisse for a special occasion dinner. The location is great, near the harbor and a short walk from our hotel. For the guys a jacket, but no tie, is preferred at the dinner hour.
The restaurant is small and cozy, with seating for about 35 but tables are not crowded together.
We were greeted by the owner and made to feel at home in his restaurant. Service was above excellent. We chose the paired dinner with wine pairings for each course. The food was outstanding and the wines were perfectly chosen to compliment the food.
This is a fine dining experience, so slow down and enjoy the ambiance, the food and the conversation. Our dinner was just short of 3 hours.
Be prepared for the final bill; Restaurant Matisse is expensive but worth the money.

“Delightful and Delicious!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012 via mobile

This place has been a mainstay of high-end culinary haunts in Victoria for many years but has lost nothing during that tenure. Classic French but less pretentious and informal. The co-owner was onsite the entire evening engaging and educating the enthralled and appreciative patrons. My ex-partner and I have eaten all over the world, but enjoyed this as much as anywhere we've been. Down side: somewhat smallish place with minimal decor, meager pour for martinis and a bit limited menu. Pluses: everything else, including great wines, service, portions, flavors, food quality et al! Frankly, although it wasn't cheap, it also seemed worth every dime. If this is an example of the restaurant quality in Victoria, I can't wait to return! This is a definite recommendation for fellow foodies out there.

“Classsic French with an Irish Host”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

This was our finest dining experience in Victoria and it was obvious from the other diners at this small restaurant that the locals favor it also. The host, whose mother called him Matisse because he was a wanna-be painter as a child (unfortunately no talent) does a great job to entice you with the dishes and doesn't disappoint in the quality or presentation. The wines, especially the BC wines, are nicely presented and very reasonably priced. The entrees are delicious and the desserts are magnificent.

Expect to spend at least two hours at dinner. The staff will pace you and not rush you. Very French in that regard. We had the Prix Fix menu, $52 without wine, beginning with lobster bisque, pate, halibut, pork or rabbit, and excellent creme brulee and Grand Marnier bread pudding. Be ready to spend a bit more than usual, but well worth the experience.

Reservations are probably necessary. We booked at least a month before traveling.

“Best Restaurant with amazing wine.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

We did the Prix Fix and each bite of food was like a symphony of tastes and a treat for the eyes. The sommelier was most knowledgable and the service was outstanding. Best french food ever eaten outside of France.
