“Filthy place, aggressively rude managers, avoid this place at all costs”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

I have been to hostels and know what to expect but this one was exceptionally dirty, did not have what was advertised in the room, and the manager named Asher was very rude and rolled her eyes several times when I complained. The other female manager, who also had long dark hair but had what may have been an Irish accent, jumped into my conversation with Asher in order to attack me verbally. I complained about the managers to the owner, who unfortunately never bothered to respond. If a negative experience is addressed properly by an owner or manager, I don't feel it is necessary to post a negative review online. However, this owner missed his opportunity to make things right.

Thank you for staying with Ocean Island Inn- we’re sorry that you experienced a less than pleasant stay.
We take great pride in the cleanliness here at Ocean Island, and employ a large staff of housekeepers who work around the clock to maintain a high level of cleanliness at all times. As well as the housekeeping supervisor, myself and the managers also check the cleanliness of our property regularly to ensure that the highest standards are met. Considering this, I can say for certain that our inn is not filthy, or exceptionally dirty, as you allege. It is possible that a small detail was overlooked by all of us. To ensure that this does happen, we have implemented some additional checks
The managers you mentioned in your review have been working for Ocean Island for quite some time, and have proven themselves as being very professional and courteous with our guests. So it is extremely difficult to imagine them being rude and uncooperative with you, especially since I have specifically discussed their handling of your complaints with them.
We make great efforts to clearly communicate all the details of our rooms to guests as part of the reservation process- including floor plans and extensive photos of each type of room on our website and in a binder at our front desk. Our staff is trained to explain the options while making a reservation as well, so I’m not sure how you could come to the conclusion that your room did not have what was advertised. Because of the dissatisfaction you expressed with your room during your stay, we upgraded you to a more expensive room free of charge, and gave you a free stay for one night. We feel that this was a very reasonable resolution.
I did receive your complaint, and wrote a response to you the same day. Unfortunately due to a glitch in my email, it wasn't sent, which I didn't realize until I saw your review on Trip Advisor. I apologize for this, as it’s our policy to answer all guest complaints promptly.
Regards,
Kevin B, owner.

Truly, not a great hostel. Crap rooms, but loud and dark.
Good young people vibe, cheap beer and music hold it up.
Paola the barmaid is great. Her frogs are to die for.
Rooms cramped.
Kitchen and equipment poor.
Parking an issue.
Reception staff more focused on being cool than helping.
Avoid if over 25.

Hi there,
While we appreciate every review we receive, we strongly feel that your description of Ocean Island does not accurately portray what we have to offer. We are unsure what you mean by “crap” rooms; we have 10 different types of rooms, which range from dorms to mini-private rooms, as well as hotel-style ensuite rooms, and apartment-style suites in a tranquil location. We provide extensive information about these options to potential guests online, over the phone and at the front desk to ensure they choose a room that is right for them; if a guest is unhappy with their room our front desk staff will happily assist them in finding a room which better suits them.
As shown by our name, we are not a hostel, since we offer a range of accommodation that suits all budgets and lifestyles. Due to this, and our welcoming atmosphere, our guests are a delightful range in age - our youngest guest was just a few days old, and our oldest was 93!
We’re not sure why parking would be an issue, as we provide almost limitless parking for our guests at a great rate for downtown Victoria, either in our lot or in one across the street.
It’s wonderful news that our bartender provided such great service, and that you enjoyed the cheap beer and live music. As well as being cheap, our large selection of beer comes from Vancouver Island’s best local breweries, and we also offer a wide selection of international beer and other drinks.
Our sunny guest kitchen is large, renovated, and fully equipped with three stoves, two ovens, two microwaves, three sinks, ample fridge space, and a wide assortment of pots, pans, utensils, dishes, etc. It even has more obscure but useful items such as a crock pot and smoothie blender!
We uphold a high level of professionalism at Ocean Island and consistently receive outstanding reviews of our staff. Considering your comment, we will make some extra checks to ensure that our standards are being upheld 100% by all staff.
Happy travels!
Ocean Island.

I stayed here for two nights a booked a female 6 berth room which was good. This is was my first experience in a hostel abdi felt so welcomed it was unbelieveable! The rooms were quiet spacious for 6 people. 2x fans and open window, freezer/fridge, sink and lockers. The room was hot but i think it was justthe time of year what can you expect with 6 people right? If i was to stay againi would go for a private room and shared bathroom. The bathrooms were clean, maintained and obvisiously recently renovated. The facilites were great with a fun bar, cheap meals and great staff! They even organised a pub crawl which was alot of fun and a way to make new friends ! Very happy traveller!

Hello!
We’re so glad you chose Ocean Island as your first backpacker’s experience; it’s always a pleasure to hear that a first-time backpacker has a fun and welcoming time at Ocean Island. Our dorms rooms are a great way to meet new people and save some cash for travelling, and like you mentioned, we also have very affordable private rooms available.
Thank you again for your review! Safe travels, and we hope to see you again sometime.

Got to Victoria after Vancouver ate our budget, we were looking for somewhere cheap to stay for a few days. We stumbled across the Ocean Island Inn and for the money it is perfect. Clean, friendly, good beer, food, bathrooms, laundry and location. Recommended on a budget and in general, awesome place.

Hello there, and thank you for reviewing us online.
We’re so glad to hear that you found your stay here clean, affordable and friendly - those are the very qualities we strive for! As well as our inexpensive rooms, we also have more upscale accommodation available for not too much more, if you find yourself in Victoria again and aren't on such a tight budget. It sounds as though you had the chance to enjoy our cafe lounge; it’s a perfect place to meet travelers, enjoy an inexpensive meal, and have a few drinks! Thank you once more for the positive review, we’re so glad you enjoyed your time with us.
Regards,
Ocean Island.

Staying here at the moment whilst travelling around the West Coast for our honeymoon. Stumbled across this place whilst looking for some cheap accomodation in the area. Fantastic location, very friendly and helpful staff and lots of information about the local area available. We stayed in a private double room with shared bathroom. Room is compact but has everything you need - comfortable bed, mini fridge, fan and some racking for storage. The bathrooms are really nice, super clean and have obviously been renovated recently. we haven't had to wait to use the bathroom yet! Food is good and reasonably priced as is the beer. Kitchen and washing facilities are great too. This place is walking distance from most of the major sights in Victoria itself. Would highly recommend this if your looking for a reaonably priced place to stay. Don't expect a hotel room as it's a hostel, however they do have larger rooms and suites available so may still be worth a look. Would definitely stay here again without hesitation.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

I stayed here for 2 nights while visiting Victoria, (its a lovely city, stay for more than 2 nights!) on my grand tour of Canada. First impressions were real good, the check in was very helpful friendly and quick, the people working there are clearly travellers also, and the parking was right across the street and not badly priced for a downtown area $22 for the 2 nights. The room was a 4 person dorm and it was a little on the small side for 4 people and their stuff, there is a large closet but it is taken up by lockers which are not so useful when you each have massive holdalls or cases. The lockers are more backpack sized which is great but it would be better to have less of them (one each would be enough) and make more space for larger bags. The room also had a table and a chair and a refrigerator which were all unused during my time there so again, are these necessary? The refrigerator also generates A LOT of heat making the room unbearably hot at night, we had the window open but this then makes it noisy (the hostel is on the corner of two streets and our room faced the intersection). The fan provided was comically useless. The beds were ok I guess, the mattresses were all a little too short for the bed frames so you find yourself slipping down if you're not careful about balancing your weight. Although they were not uncomfortable overall, I would say they were the worst beds I have slept in on this trip (so far!!) the hostel itself is very well designed however, there are plenty of bathrooms with bath/shower combos and there is a gate on the first of the accommodation floors requires a key so the rooms are very secure. On the grind floor there is a kitchen and space to chill out as well as computers and a bar serving drinks and food which is something I have not encountered in a hostel before and I think it's great. However, as someone else has observed this is a hostel where everything costs extra! Fair enough meals and drink but the breakfast is also charged (everywhere else I've stayed is free) the computers also are charged to use. I guess you can balance these things against the fact it's good value in begin with but little charges here and there make it seem kind of petty. There is a real good atmosphere here with lots of people and lots of events and stuff going on each night it's a buzzing kind of place to be, despite that the rooms are all far enough away from the communal area that there are no problems with noise from within the hostel. Victoria seems a safe pleasant city but the area around the hostel seemed a little more neglected than elsewhere, it seemed to be the place for homeless folk to hang out and ask for money. Overall it's a good stay, the location is close to everything, the communal areas are excellent, it has good security, great staff and overall represents good value for money. It's a shame the rooms really let it down, I did see posters for different rooms with more space but no doubt there is a significant charge to upgrade to these. I think they need to put a little more effort into making the basic rooms better.

Room Tip: If you want a good room it seems you have to pay more than the basic, I don't know how much so i...

Hello there and thank you for the review of Ocean Island.
We always appreciate detailed feedback from our past guests, and your comments go a long way in helping us understand a few aspects of our inn that we might improve upon.
Firstly, I’d like to thank you for your positive comments about our inn; it’s always a pleasure to hear when a guest enjoys what we provide here. it’s great to hear that you thought highly of our all-star front desk staff, and that you found us a great value for your money, including our low parking fees. You seem to have thought highly of our common areas as well, which is great! From our spacious shared kitchen, to our inviting Cafe Lounge and the fun events we host, it’s always great to know that a guest took advantage of all we have to offer here. We’re also glad you liked our many individual bathrooms, we have put a lot of time and effort into making the bathrooms comfortable, convenient and private.
We provide items such as a table, a chair and the fridge in each of our dorm rooms because we find that the vast majority of guests appreciate these extras, which add a bit of convenience to their stay. However, we will look into removing these items from our smaller dorm rooms to add some extra room during our busy season.
Victoria almost always remains at a moderate temperature year round, but for those occasional days when the temperature climbs too high we include fans in all our rooms. If an extra fan is needed, or for some reason your fan is not working properly, we have plenty more available - just ask the front desk and we’ll give you another one.
We use medium-firm mattresses - all of which are of a standard length and width. While no single type of mattress will be favoured by everyone, we have found that the mattresses we provide are preferred by the majority of our guests.
We feel that providing the lowest possible rates in Victoria means the most to our guests, which is why we focus on maintaining a minimum nightly rate, rather than providing complimentary items which not every guest will use. That way, each and every one of our guests benefits! For instance, we found that free and reliable access to wireless throughout our building was better appreciated by our guests than free time on our internet terminals, as most people prefer to use their own devices in the convenience of their own room.
Our ideal downtown location means that we do have to deal with typical downtown issues, such as homelessness. That being said, Victoria’s streets are known to be quite safe. As you mentioned in your review, our building is very secure, with multiple locked doors and 24 hour front desk staff.
We have a wide variety of rooms to suit every budget; the discount dorms - which is the style of room you stayed in - is least expensive option. As you mentioned, these rooms aren’t as quiet due to their location facing the street, and are discounted for this reason. At any point during your stay you can upgrade to other dorms or private rooms for just a few dollars more per night; these rooms are also excellent value, and many guests remark on how inexpensive a room upgrade is. We encourage people to check out the detailed information provided on our website or at the front desk to ensure they choose the room that is right for them.
It’s always a pleasure to hear when a guest enjoys their time here, it means we’ve achieved what we were hoping for. We’re glad you took the time to mention aspects of Ocean Island such as our inviting cafe lounge, our fantastic front desk staff, and our undeniably upbeat environment. We hope to see you again sometime in the future!
Thank you again for your review,
Ocean Island.

I must admit, It has been my first time travelling and I have never stayed in a place like Ocean Island. I wasn't sure what to expect at first, but I am pleased to say I had a fantastic stay. Ocean Island is great value for money, the bed I slept in was extremely comfortable, the food was great, the service was amazing, the location is fantastic, it's near to many shops, restaurants and amenities and anything else is easily accessible via the frequent and well priced public transport systems. I loved my stay in Victoria and I feel that my stay at Ocean Island significantly contributed to my enjoyment. I would thoroughly recommend a stay should you visit Victoria. It was excellent.
