“Perfect location in a charming city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

When first coming to the hotel we were concerned that it would be too far from where 'it' is at, but we found that the location was perfect: in a quiet neighborhood near the park but also a quick stroll from the downtown destinations.

We were lucky to stay in a suite the newly renovated Annex. It was as spacious as an apartment and in all new sparkling condition. While we didn't take full advantage of the kitchen, we were able to make good use of our restaurant leftovers at lunchtime and enjoy breakfast before we left our room for the morning. Thrifty Foods supermarket is just down the street in James Bay.

Sleeping arrangements were great for us and our two children - king bed in the bedroom and pull-out sofa in the livingroom. Being in the Annex it was extremely quiet at night.

The WiFi in the Annex was spotty and only some of our devices could function on the weak signal.

While the front desk staff were pleasant enough, we did not feel the warm hospitality that one often finds at other 'botique' hotels. Check-in and check-out were quick. And the free parking was really appreciated after staying in Seattle for several previous nights!

Room Tip: From the reviews it seems like the room quality in the Annex is better than the main hotel. But ther...

I decided to stay at this hotel after reading some good reviews. But my experience was completely opposite. Any hotel provides a very minimum basic standard. This hotel even doesn't provide that. All the furniture including the bed, chair, table and drawers outlived their lives and should have been scrapped long back. They were chipped off, bore deep scratches, stains and were just not acceptable. The hotel held $50 lest I damage something in the room. They should know that even if they put up all the furniture in the room for sale in Kijiji or go for a yard sale, no one will pay any amount to pick up this junk. If you wanted to relax on the only wooden chair in the room, you would slide down and fall off. And if you sat upright, in a few minutes your butts would begin to hurt. The table was so small that it's legs were as narrow as a walking stick. They would take dollars, but wouldn't return even cents' worth. Disappointing !

We stayed at the James Bay Inn for 3 nights. We loved the location, ever so slightly off the beaten path in a quiet residential neighborhood. It's an easy walk a few blocks to the main shopping / entertainment area of Victoria. While the room was very basic, it was clean and comfy. The floor sloped, which was a bit disconcerting at first, but in reality added to the charm of this old building. Our only complaint is the hot water in the shower was very difficult to control - it ran very hot & then freezing cold within seconds.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the third floor. We were on the 2nd floor even though we had requested a 3rd floor...

I loved my stay at the JAMES BAY INN. The hotel is furnished in a European style that I was hoping for. Check-in was quick and pleasant and my room was ready. THE room was clean and had enough space to walk around. The hotel doesn't have elevators, so you will need to carry your luggage up the stairs to your room. The James Bay Inn also has a cafe that serves wonderful meals. I had dinner there after a day of site seeing. The 3 course meal special was a great bargain as prices are high in the area. The hotel is 3 blocks behind the PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS and the INNER HARBOR in a residential neighborhood.

Room Tip: The rooms on the first floor would be better for those with mobility issues. the stairs are quite nu...

I have stayed at the James Bay Inn Hotel and Suites numerous times in my 15 yrs living in BC. I believe I have stayed in 90% of the rooms. The ownership, management and the long time staff make you feel like you belong. The care and attention that is given to a guest is 1st class. An old building with lots of character. I would recommend if you are traveling to Victoria and you don't mind an older property with charm to stay there. The pub and restaurant street level offers everything you need and more with the friendly staff. Most have been there for a decade. Repeat customers are always remembered and taken care of. I have stayed in hotels all over this country and would definetly stay there again and again. Cudos to the ownership and the staff for maintaining such a level of quality and service.

Room Tip: If you have trouble with mobility, stairs maybe an issue as it does not have an elevator.

This Inn dates back to the late 1800's and has no elevator. However the staff were most helpful in carrying our luggage up the two flights a stairs to our suite on the top floor. As we were both disabled with bad backs, this was not suitable to our limitations. Cafe on the ground floor was quite well run and provided our breakfast in quick time. The Pub in the basement served up great food for a dinner, was clean and well serviced. The only king size bed was on that top floor so we had to accept that room. As we were quests of the Kite Festival at Clover Point for the Sat. and Sun. we were very tired at the end of each day and didn't appreciate all those stairs.\

We won't stay here again - back to the Best Western on the harbour.
Thanks

Room Tip: Choose rooms on the 2nd floor.

I had a "petit" room which was perfect for a solo traveler. Employees at the desk were great. Came in late one night really craving a cup of hot tea, the man at the desk got a cup for me. I think that was outside his actual duties, but it was greatly appreciated.
