“Pub is nice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2014

The hotel is old, yes, as for individual room temp controls, that's why windows open. I found the price was good and as I didn't want to pay double for a sleep it was a good choice. Room was clean and had a nice comfy Queen bed and good linens. Didn't watch TV, but wifi was good. The location is great, just a few minute walk to the harbour and museum. Desk staff were typical ice cold Victorians, pub bartender and servers were better. Overall it's a good deal if you get a decent rate.

Room Tip: Mine was a Queen in the front and I slept fine there.

All the hotel is old and there is a bit of a funny smell around the lobby and stairs but the room was clean, quiet and comfy. The bathroom was fine.
short walk to downtown area and it is just down the road from the last/first stop of the 70/72 buses which take you to and from the ferry which was really handy.
no fridge or tea and coffee in the room but there is in reception
we would stay here again

Great location in a quiet residential area but with Parliament just 3 blocks away outside the window. Easy jog to the path that goes along the sound. The beds were comfortable. The inn had wavy floors, great old-style balcony and lobby (no elevator!). There is a really good restaurant downstairs. We had breakfast there and friends from Victoria had dinner while we ate dessert -- said they often go there.

Room Tip: Our room was on the second floor and overlooked Parliament and the neighborhood -- nice view.

As a female who has travelled with my bike on several continents, it had always bothered me how North America's hotel standard is so overblown and geared towards couples. And don't get me started on single supplement pricing....

I've been on the lookout for "solo-friendly," homey places to stay when I travel and found my first visit to James Bay Inn a wonderful surprise. Bonus: it's in a safe, central area of Victoria and not in the city's corporate tourist hotel district.

I was really pleased by how the James Bay Inn felt like a nice fit, right from the start. My room was modest, clean, and extremely quiet. The neighbourhood is one of the most historic in Victoria--artist Emily Carr's birthplace is right across the street!

I could easily walk to the beach, to downtown, and to locally-owned shops and cafes. The staff were very friendly. My bicycle was safe in a locked storage space. in the morning I could pour a cup of complimentary tea and wake up slowly in a tucked away verandah. And in the evening I could sip wine and chat with other travellers in the hotel foyer if I didn't feel like going out.

I thought this little place was perfect for me.

Booked this as part of a package for a one night stay in Victoria, based on price and character. Was not disappointed! Super affordable and such a quaint place! Felt like I was taken back in time. Rooms were small but comfy (we had a queen bed). Perfect for the night. It is about 3-4 blocks past the main area of Victoria where you'll find so many restaurants/bars, shops, and beautiful sights. Although it was separate from that area, it makes for a nice walk (or a quick $7 cab ride). Ladies, be aware that there are no hair dryers in the room! Went to the JBI restaurant for breakfast the next morning - absolutely delicious.

Narissa was the concierge Friday evening. She was amazing! So friendly and so helpful. She gave us a map and pointed out a bunch of great places to go around town at night.

Great find overall!

We found this place in a pamphlet and got the room via Expedia. I have to agree 100% with iRmacman and georgiahurlock's reviews. While Maureen98033 has some points, she is totally wrong to say it's really awful. The building is from 1911. Of course it's not going to be like some thing built now. That's part of it's charm! And I notice she doesn't mention what she paid. I've paided 3 times as much for a room in Paris and gotten 1/2 the value (no elevator, coffee machine, no wifi.....). We got our rooms for about $75/night all in. It's located about 5 min from the government buildings and a short block to Beacon Hill park.. The location is great! There is a restaurant in the building that has an Art Deco design. The food was excellent. We also will be back.

If you are looking for cookie-cutter, Motel-8-style accommodation, look somewhere else. If you like good prices, excellent location and a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere, the James Bay Inn is a good choice for your stay.

James Bay itself is a delightful, historic and very well maintained residential neighbourhood. The hotel is situated in the middle of it, with only a five or ten minute walk to the harbour, the legislature and the museum/Imax theatre. The reviewer who called it "old, smelly and really awful" in my opinion was just plain unfair. Old it may be, but it is a clean and charming establishment with a pleasant pub, a very good restaurant, courteous staff and comfortable -- albeit rather old-fashioned -- rooms.

We've stayed there before. We will stay again.
