I am 33, male and traveled alone to British Columbia for my first vacation outside the U.S. Pros of the Red Lion Inn in Victoria: the room exceeded every expectation I might have had, the staff were very helpful and courteous, and the value was great.
I did not spend much time in my room, but was impressed by the marble counters in the bathroom, large TV set, iron and ironing board, microwave oven, fridge and overall cleaniness of everything. This was my first visit not only to Victoria, but to a foreign country, and one evening staff member in particular was very helpful giving me directions after I returned and was not able to find the electronics store she had directed me to.
I had to laugh when I read previous posts about strip clubs or sketchy characters in the parking area. Honestly, I had no idea about any of this during my two weekdays at the hotel. Perhaps on the weekend it is a different scene, but I was aware only of a liquor store adjacent to the street and did not see anything that made me uncomfortable. Then again, I'm from L.A. I mean, don't leave any valuables in your car when you travel and don't go looking for trouble, and you should be fine wherever you stay the night.
My room was quiet enough to hear a pin drop, but I will mention that my window faced an alley that was nowhere near the street or the supposed strip club. And no, the hotel is not located in downtown Victoria. It is within walking distance of nothing, not even the Denny's, but all of this was located a five minute drive away. I would stay here again if traveling in Victoria due to the room, the staff and how quiet it was.
