“Best stay EVER!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2012

Booked through Victoria Clipper Vacations. Great location from the terminal.
We arrived earlier than the normal check in time but the front desk clerk allowed us to check or bags so that we could walk around the city withot dragging them along. She took my cell number with the promise of calling me when they had our room ready. She called about an hour later!! Great!!
Bed was fresh, towels were fresh, robe (unexpected surprise) was fresh!! Great view from our balcony!!
Staff was friendly. Pool was great!!! (although there was no hot tub)
We did not take advantage of the Aura restuarant, but it looked very elegant!
Would recomend this hotel to anyone interested.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a balcony, so you will get a great view of the harbour no matter what. I would ho...

missing something.

The staff is/was pleasant. The thing we could not understand was the horrible internet access. Having just put up with 4 nights of bad wireless access in Tofino, BC (a little understandable since Tofino is in the middle of nowhere) we really needed internet access to get both work done and to try to find some things to do in Victoria. The wireless access was horrible (to be nice). After hours the night manager had to bring up an ethernet cord for hard wire access (he did this and I need to say he was such a nice person/employee). This did not help with iPads and wireless devices but at least we were able to use a computer with internet access.

The hotel seems to have so much empty space.........or should I say space that is ready to be used for weddings and special events. They have a small indoor pool area but no jacuzzi or other spa like facilities. it would of been nice for them to add more space to hotel amenities like that but that would probably take away from all the empty space that just sits there waiting for someone to book a wedding event. Also they completely blocked off direct access to the back yards and harbor walkway by a large pond so you had to go out the small front lobby and door to go anywhere. The gym equipment is in a tiny rectangle room right next to the little pool area. We did pay extra for an Erickson wing room and they are really nice but not sure if they are as nice as the amount of money they are trying to get for them.

They hotel does have one more thing going for it = it is close to Fisherman's Wharf and after visiting all the places along the harbor that seemed like the nicest little place to eat a decent meal at a decent price (also the tour operators seemed better out of Fisherman's vs the overly hyped marina near the Empress Hotel).

Room Tip: Must splurge for Erickson wing if you want a nice room

I really enjoyed staying at the laurel inn, it's clean and has great views! I booked from Hotwire and got a great deal, and the hotel upgraded my room to a "premium view" for free, one entire side of the room was glass so you could enjoy the view. It was a short and scenic waterfront walk to downtown so the location was good. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are clean. Nice large bathtub in the bathroom and they supply aveda products.

Cons: Parking is $15/night, patios are REALLY small, restaurant is expensive, rooms are small.

Overall I really liked my experience and would recommend it, I would definitely stay there again.

Good location and nice views across the harbour. We enjoyed watching the activity on the water and the walk to the main harbour. Room was well appointed. We did not eat at the hotel so cannot comment on the restaurant. Would stay here again.

We were really looking forward to this hotel however, we were very disappointed when we got there. The rooms we were checked in to had balconies overlooking the harbour, but we couldn't see the harbour because of the trees! The rooms really need updating, and what is the point of just putting one bathrobe in a room where two people are booked in?! In the end I called the reception to advise there was only one robe and they stated that if we wanted another we could have one, but their policy is to put one only in the room - I presume in case you steal it!

On the whole the hotel was clean/presentable, just not up to what the website shows!

The harbor and garden views from our patio were exceptional. Erickson wing, with infusion of Asian art, was Zen-like. We were initially given a suite facing the harbor but with a large expanse of rooftop in the immediate foreground. Our request for a different suite was honored the next day and we were well pleased. Breakfast on the deck at Aura was quite pleasant, and the director of food and bev personally made sure all was well with us and our little service dog. One oddity: calls to the front desk, more than once, rang repeatedly before being picked up. With its luxuriant artwork, amazing views, and ultra-clean, elegant design, this is among the most esthetically inspired properties we have visited.

Room Tip: The Erickson suites facing the Asian garden and harbor beyond are jaw-droppers.

Dear Rich H,

Sublime certainly does discribe our Zen Gardens. I too cannot think of a more beautiful Japanese Garden. It really is a little piece of paradise, isn't it?

You mentioned that this is "among the most esthetically inspiring properties that you have visited". You have an excellent eye! The Erickson Wing was designed by the world famous Canadian architect, Arthur Erickson, who, amongst his vast portfolio, also designed the Vancouver Courthouse,Simon Fraser University and Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto, to name a few. His avant guard use of glass and concrete in his designs allows for sun and shadow to take a prominent place in the design features.Every angle is purposeful, every step is not only functional but deliberate in it's placement and construction. We are truly very lucky to have such an iconic building to care for. I am so glad that you enjoyed it.

And yes, I am not surprised that our Director of Food & Beverage had fun with your little service dog - almost every one of us love doggies and love having them stay with us. There's usually a jar of puppy treats around most offices...just in case we get a visit! We are definitely the city's favourite pet hotel!
Thanks again for the post and do hope you return for another visit.

~Judy
