We had a very pleasant and comfortable stay at the Dalton. We had a boutique room which was exceptionally clean (honestly I checked), it was very spacious with canopy queen (5ft) bed - sheets were bright white, crisp and ironed. There was a chaise longue sofa, large antique tv unit, coffee machine, ceiling fan, air con. The bathroom (exceptionally clean) was large with bath/shower over, sink with huge countertop for all my makeup etc. We asked for a quiet room and were given an internal room - there was no view but oh .. so quiet even though the hotel was full for our stay we did not hear any noise whatsoever - the walls are thick and you do not hear any noise from the adjacent rooms (no tv noise, no babies crying, no shouting as we have experienced in other hotels - yes there was a baby next door!). We asked for a kettle at reception - it was delivered to our room within about 5 minutes. The staff were extremely helpful - nothing was too much trouble from management, reception, cleaners.
From the information we saw the Dalton is the oldest hotel in Victoria and does have old world character and charm - it is sympathetically decorated to keep the character of its original period - some might say old fashioned but I would say "in keeping with the buildings character and age". In the communal areas and on the stairs there is beautiful wood panelling.
The continental breakfast was adequate very similar to many other hotels. Unfortunately the restaurant closed just before our arrival. The hotel is only about 6 blocks from the bus station/downtown and takes about 8 mins to walk and about 12 mins to Beacon Hill Park. The location was excellent for us - we were able to walk everywhere - inner harbour, parliament building, museum etc. Chinatown in the opposite direction about 8 mins. They also have suites which include a small kitchenette, sitting room and bedroom. The hotel is undergoing renovations but we did not hear any building works etc nor did we see any builders etc. We thought the Dalton was excellent value for the price.
The hotel is situation near the Catholic Cathedral - well worth a look to see the beautiful stained glass and vaulted ceilings.
If you like sleek, contemporary and modern then this is not the place.
internal rooms are very very quiet; boutique rooms are larger.
