“BW Carlton Plaza - attentive service”

Best Western Carlton Plaza Hotel

Jul 6, 2008

We spent 12 nights in hotels in WA and OR, USA and BC, Canada. The 2 nights in this hotel were the best of those. Spacious and comfortable rooms and a good location, but in particular I wanted to comment on the friendly and helpful attitude of the front desk staff and porters, all of whom had time for a chat and more importantly were willing to help with all sorts of organisational details (e.g. arranging a whale-watching trip). These staff gave us a taste of Canadian hospitality.

Well I am at odds with this one...The staff was amazing,so helpful from the valet to the front desk who pulled up the website for the local movie theatres. The location is good depending on what you are looking for,we were able to walk to the waterfront and my daughters favorite store (LULULEMON) and hubby and son were able to walk to the Save-on-foods memorial center for the monster truck show. The room was clean and quite large.

Now for the downside,we booked directly with Best Western using points for our stay like we always do,this was our first time with this location though I personally don`t like using valet and I guess that might explain my surprise that it costs $9 a day for the service, there was no mention of this when I bokked so I would have liked a little heads up. I booked 2 queens,I sleep on a king at home but I do not think it was 2 queens more like 2 dbls! The bathroom is so small it can be challenging to close the door once you are in there. The location can be a plus or a minus on the way home from the memorial center my son and hubby witnessed a mugging and fight, druggies do hang out at the 7-11 accross the street and there is an uneasy feeling that far up from the waterfront.

Again the property was clean and the staff were the friendliest and most helpful I think I have ever met. But I think next time I will just pony up the cash and stay at either the Marriott or my favorite the Coast Victoria Harbourside. The location for the coast is not as good for walking to the aterfront but the hotel itself is waterfront and it is a nice walk, they offer a complimentry shuttle to wherever it is you want to go and there is no cahrge for parking.Hopefully someone will get something from my review.

I would like to thank the TripAdvisor member for submitting a review for our hotel. I am glad to hear that the staff of our hotel made them fell welcome and that they looked after your needs when they needed information.
Regarding the valet parking, we have recently updated the information regarding our parking challenges here at the hotel by informing as many booking channels as possible because there have recenlty been comments by other guests about not being aware that, firstly, we have valet parking only and secondly, that we charge for the service but only from May 1st to October 15th. Most hotels with a downtown location do charge for parking.
Regarding the room that the member received not having queen beds, given the opportunity to check, we would be happy to research why the room Best Western booked was for a room with two double beds. If the writer reads this response, I would encourage thm to contact us at the hotel so we can make it right.
Regarding our location, I admit Victoria does have it's social challenges as most downtown locations do. I don't think Victoria stands out above other city centres across Canada or the US in this regard.
Again, we thank to writer of the review.

“Warm friendly service, central location!”

I truly enjoyed my stay at the Best Western Carlton Plaza in Victoria, BC. Right from check-in all the way to check-out, the staff were extremely accomodating and very friendly at all times. They even called me in my room to make sure that I was enjoying my stay!

The hotel offers a valet parking service which is very convenient since parking is limited downtown and can be a costly nightmare if you had to park yourself!

The rooms are clean and up to date. The hotel offers complimentary wireless internet and free bottles of water which I thought were a nice touch and added bonus. You can always count on value when you stay at a Best Western!

The best part is the location. Although staying right in the heart of the city can sometimes subject one to the "usual downtown noises," the convenience and central location of the hotel more than compensate. While the hotel is not situation on the harbour, it is a very leisurely 10 minute walk down Government street to the inner harbour. It's only a couple of blocks to Chinatown or the Bay Centre which is the main shopping centre downtown. Also, if you book a bus tour or a whale watching trip, the tour company will even come and pick you up!

Don't be afraid to ask the Front Desk for directions or anything you may need as they are very friendly and accomodating.

Victoria was the fifth of six Honeymoon destinations in Canada. We drove there from Whistler and what a long drive it was! Due to road works, bad map reading and a late ferry (the crossing took 1 1/2 hrs). what should have been a 4 1/2 hr journey took 9hrs! Victoria was big, busy, noisy and very different from anywhere i've ever stayed before it made me realise that i'm more of a country girl at heart, but if you like hustle and bustle i'm sure you'll like Victoria.
Our hotel was a little worn around the edges but our room was clean, spacious with a lovely big comfortable bed, the view was ok too although i prefared seeing Mountains. The guy behind the front desk who signed us in was a little unfriendly and our car was valet parked at an undisclosed location. I would stay here again as our room was comfortable, the hotel was conveniently located for the town and harbour and we were not bothered by noise.
There were lots of shops including a mall with a food hall offering lots of different types of food. The walk along the harbour is nice, the evening we went there was lots of entertainment such as musicians, artists etc. We went whale watching with 'Seafun Safaris' which cost $250. The guide really knew his stuff but we didn't see a single whale in 41/2 hrs which was more than a let down, infact we didn't see much of anything due to the "unusual" thick fog. Occassionally there was a slight break in the fog which allowed us to see some Sealions and an Eagle. The guide seemed dissapointed that we had not seen any Whales and told us that we could come again for free (pity it was our last day). Oh and when they say wrap up it's for a reason, it may be sunny on land but it gets REALLY cold on the water. Don't worry too much if you go without something warm as you will get offered coats, hats and gloves during the trip. If you have the time take a drive up the west coast, there's a rainforrest you can walk through to get to the beach, it's quite a steep uneven path but the view is worth it. There's also a nice little place called Honeymoon Bay which should be straight forward to get to only we got majorly lost and ended up driving along a loging road through the mountains thankfully it was a weekend so there were no trucks. We made it eventually (sheer luck) had a relaxing afternoon enjoying the scenery and took the safer route back to the hotel. If you like live music visit the 'Swans Brew Pub' which is approximately a 10 minute walk away from the hotel, it has good food and a good atmosphere.
I will be writing reviews and posting photo's for Tunnel Mountain Resort - Banff, Sunwapter Falls Resort - Jasper, Thompson Hotel & Conference Centre - Kamloops, Summit Lodge & Spa - Whistler and Pacific Palisades Hotel - Vancouver

I'd like to thank the writer of the review for staying with us during their trip to Victoria. Sounds like the trip getting here was a bit harrowing!!

With respect to not knowing where their car was parked, we are alocated downtown Victoria and our hotel does not have a parking lot. We lease space from the City of Victoria's parking lot just up on the next block from the hotel. It is about a 3 minute walk from the hotel but because of the diffiiculty with the location of the lot and gaining access to the area that is gated, we provide staff to valet park all of our guest's vehicles. Our staff require a remote control device as well as a specially programmed key card as supplied by the city to gain access to the part of the parkade where we park our guest's vehicles. If ever a guest wishes to see where their vehicle is parked, we can certainly show any guest wanting to see the space. Perhaps this was not made clear this time around. We will certainly be sure to advise all future guest that the option to see where their vehicle is parked is made very clear.

I liked this hotel. It was centrally located and within walking distance to the parliament buildings, and other tourist locations. We didn't rent a car, so being in a central location worked for us. At check-in the clerk was pleasant enough. I found the beds to be quite comfortable; the room was very clean (the bathroom spotless). I really liked the shower...it was one of those rain type shower heads, so not a lot of pressure. The kitchen had a full size fridge and stove...I suppose this would be a good thing if you were planning on spending more time and didn't want to eat out every night. The cupboards were fully stocked with dishes, pots and pans. There was a microwave, and a two cup coffee maker. The hotel supplied coffee, tea, as well as couple of bottles of water. The large hall closet had a wall safe for valuables (create your own code or use your credit card to activate). The sofa in our room had a pull-out that was quite comfortable. There was also an extra blanket available in the hall closet (for the pull-out). This hotel had a dated decor, but was clean and budget friendly with many restaurants, shops, and boutiques nearby.
