“Excellent experience overall”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

We had booked with Prince of Whales, but due to engine problems, they rebooked us with Five Star. We ended up having an excellent experience with them. Despite there being some heavy fog in the area in the days prior, we lucked into a beautiful sunny morning. We went out on the 9am tour and had a very smooth ride out of the harbor and into the straight. We saw whales amost immeidately after we arrived in the straight and were able to watch the pod - a mother and three smaller whales - for a long time. The whales moved out of the area after a while, so the boat took us out to Race Rocks to see the lighthouse and the large community of sea lions that live in that area. We saw two different varieties of sea lions and harbor seals. We circled back to where the whales were initionally and saw what appeared to be the pod taking down a seal! Very exciting to see. We even saw one of the smaller whales "spyhopping"! Also very exciting.

The naturalists on board the boat were wonderful. They were very knowledgeable and answered all of the questions raised by passengers, no matter how silly or basic. They were great at spotting the wildlife and explaining what behaviors we were seeing and what we could expect next. If I were back in Victoria, I would definitely go out with Five Star again.

“Wonderful way to spend an afternoon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

We really enjoyed everything about this company. Everyone was very friendly and great to deal with. We traveled from Saskatchewan to Victoria specifically to go whale watching, and we left feeling that we had definitely picked the right company to go with. We brought our 18 month old and our 5 year old, and it was a great trip for kids. Our daughter loved being able to go outside and then come back into the cabin to warm up, and the inside cabin was very roomy and not crowded, even when near maximum occupancy. We did get to see some Transient Orcas, and we were happy that the captain respected the whales and stayed back, without attempting to crowd them. We felt this was a very ethical company to deal with, and that was reinforced when talking with Andrew, our naturalist. He was very knowledgeable about the whales and the challenges the Orcas face, and wasn't simply reciting "whale facts for tourists". I would definitely tour with this company again, and hope to make it out there next summer.

“Can't believe I was that close to so many Killer Whales in the wild!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

We had a wonderful time from start to finish. The entire crew was very knowledgable. We saw about 20 Killer Whales on our tour and the crew did an excellent job explaining their behavior. I'll take this tour again the next time I'm in Victoria. One reason I chose this tour was the enclosed cabin space for rainy days. If you get cold on deck you can go inside to escape the weather.

“Smooth ride”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013 via mobile

Whale watching was not quite on our itinerary on our trip to Victoria. My buddy had just narrated his story to sea sickness when he had tried it in the past.

Concierge at 'Empress' next door assured me that the ride would be comfortable so we decided to take the plunge-- along with two kids 9 and 6.

Everybody has their own experience and as the tour guide told us, rarely but it does happen, that one may not see any whales during the trip. We did get lucky--perfect weather, not super cold, and lots of big fishes. Mind u, u only see fins and backs of those things--this is not ur pet Dolphins doing all sorts of tricks :)

The staff was polite and courteous. They have hot chocolate and coffee machine on the boat and some heavy-duty jackets as well. The tour lasts about 3-4 hours so some plans may need to be adjusted.

My better half, who is always concerned about sea sickness didn't get it. Kids loved it. What more can a Dad and Hubby ask for?
