“Wonderful Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

I recently had a long term stay here and found this to be a lovely, charming hotel with incredible character.

My one bedroom suite was huge and gorgeous, with two storey ceilings, a large living/dining area, small kitchen and good bedroom. The kitchen was aged but still sufficient for my purposes. I also had a small patio out back. The only downside was that the walls are a little thin. That said, I had no issues with sleeping or otherwise being comfortable.

The building itself is gorgeous. There is a large restaurant with a good menu and an amazing collection of beers, many of which are made on site. They also have a small liquor store which sells a lot of their beers. Perhaps the best thing about this place is the live music every night.

The hotel is located on the edge of downtown Victoria so requires some walking to go some places. Nonetheless, the neighbourhood is very interesting with plenty of restaurants, shopping and sightseeing. Chinatown is also just around the corner.

If you have ever stayed in a hotel for more than a week you know the feeling of being cooped up or going stir crazy. That does not happen here! I truly felt like I was 'home' in my suite.

Free WiFi is a bonus.

Overall this is a superb property with lots of charm and interesting features. I would not hesitate to recommend it.

We did a girlfriend getaway and chose the Swans based on our Internet search: we were looking for a convenient downtown location, fair price and clean hotel with some character. We found it in the Swans. Live jazz band downstairs in their brewpub with locally made beer was also a draw. Chinatown and Government Street are right around the corner. The staff were friendly. Our room had a small kitchenette and a loft bedroom. The bed was extremely comfortable: this was a huge surprise and a rare find for the price we paid! We could tell it had been renovated recently yet still maintained its historical tone. The only thing we didn't like, which wasn't the fault of the Swans Hotel, was nearby construction noises wakening us in the morning. The neighbourhood reminded us of England or parts of Montreal. You won't be disappointed with The Swans!

Room Tip: You can request a room that's not overtop of the brewpub so that it's quiet. You can also...

I often try and stay at Swans when I am in Victoria. I always find the rooms very comfortable and spacious. I remember when it used to be an apartment building and so the rooms retain that small loft apartment feel. Many if not all the rooms have kitchen facilities. All of the rooms have original art as does the pub below. The one time owner, Michael Williams, used to collect art and had a great collection which hung in the pub and hotel. He left it to the University of Victoria which regrettably, if understandably, has taken some of the gems of the collection away.

I have always really loved this hotel, something of my own history and many hours spent in the pub drinking the beer they brew,I suspect, but it is comfortable, well situated and the rooms are often far more interesting than other hotels.

Room Tip: They have some cheaper rooms over the pub. They are noisy, but a good deal if you don't mind hav...

Stay here every month for work - love it! Hip New Orleans feel....and cleaner! Neat little balconies in most rooms, off the living room - can open up the doors and check out what's going on outside...just like New Orleans...cool. Usually have neat bands playing, they had a cool, jazzy brass band there last time, with one guy playing a big tuba.

And the beer is awesome! Brewpub Scotch Ale is to die for. Highly recommend!

A short walk from the inner harbour Swans is not like any other hotel, anywhere! The rooms are unique, some are fantastic, and having stayed there several times I can't agree with anything in QN95's 'shabby' review. I've always found the rooms to be excellent.
The ground floor is a brewpub with excellent beer, reasonable food and live music and dancing every night. If you want more than pub food there is also a nice Bistro.
The staff are all very friendly and efficient, apart from the ones behind the bar, who aren't !

Room Tip: The cheaper rooms are over the pub which is audible until closing. This is made very clear upon book...

Thank you very much for the kind words about our hotel. Indeed, our hotel is very unique and different with most of our suites being two level. And in addition, each separate suite is unique with no two suites being exactly alike. We have spoken with our bar staff to be more upbeat and personable. We hope to see you again on your next visit to Victoria.

Not worth it.
Stayed one night in late December 2012.
We had a one bedroom suite, second floor, away from the pub.
Holes in the sheets and threadbare in many other areas.
We could hear every word of the very earnest relationship discussion next door (the couple is definitely breaking up).
The linens on the pull out couch looked like they had not been changed.
The mattress on that couch was ridiculous.
Slept on the floor instead.

Go elsewhere, unless you like camping.

Room Tip: Don't.

The hotel is awesome.

If you are tired of the typical hotel room, and really want a genuine boutique hotel, this is it. The building is an old one, with a great feel to it. The lobby area with the brew-pub always seem to be bustling, and give the hotel the feeling of an Inn from 100 or 200 years ago.

The rooms are spectacular in their size and appointments You get a very clean room with all modern amenities spread over 2 floors with a full washroom, kitchen, living room and even a balcony. Mind you the one negative is that these rooms seem to have no view, and the only natural light in the rooms themselves was from skylights.

We genuinely enjoyed our stay, we have stayed at the Empress in the past, but the rooms at Empress aren't that great. We'll be staying here from now.
