“IMAX upgrade needed.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

This IMAX is the biggest screen in BC but it needs to be upgraded to be able to show 3D movies. This theatre is losing viewers to Silver City that has IMAX 3D.

Thank you for your post and we couldn't agree more!

As the industry migrates from film to digital projection, we are looking at digital projection systems which would also make us 3D capable.

As you correctly point out the IMAX theatre at Silver City is 3D capable (and has a digital projection system), but unfortunately this IMAX system would not fill our screen. In terms of square footage our screen is almost twice the size.

That said, IMAX is currently developing their next generation digital system (with laser illumination vs. xenon bulb) that would fill our screen, but it's not slated for release until 2015. We are looking at this system as well as interim systems to make us digital and 3D capable. As our choices and decsions become clearer will we make a public announcement sometime in 2014.

Once again thank you for your comments and for visiing IMAX Victoria. We look forwarf to hosting you again sometime soon.
Kindest regards,
Paul Wild

“Great Fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

Saw the whale movie with my grandson. Great place, great movie, and great venue.

The lines are well organized, the staff is efficient and well organized, and the wait (endless for a five year old) wasn't terrible.

“Spectacular, sometimes!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

We have been a couple of times over the past year and enjoyed it both times. How much you enjoy the shows depends on several factors. The content of the story told and how well the story fits into the IMAX format are probably the two most important.
The first story, about animals in Africa fell a little short on both counts. Not exactly a gripping story as I remember little about it! As for the IMAX aspect, I don't think they have as much of the dizzying spinning and banking as they used to do. A few scenes of flying over the Savanna, but only for a few seconds.
The second show we saw, Shackleton in the Antarctic, was surprisingly fantastic. What a story, what a yarn and even with many shots being original B&W, the visual aspect was stunning!
The first show may as well have been shown on a normal format screen and the Antarctic one would have still been fantastic on a 'normal' size screen, the IMAX just added to it.

Thank you for taking the time to post a thoughtful review.

I certainly agree with your assessment and also agree that Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure is a terrific film although unfortunately it has ended on the schedule now.

"IMAX" films are made by a variety of large-format film makers (and budgets) and as a result they can vary in style & content providing a varying look and feel. By and large most productions are high quality, but as with the Hollywood films they can vary in content and appeal.

As an exhibitor we do our best to select films that we feel our audiences will enjoy and take into consideration different demographics including, for example, families whenever we can. Kenya: Animal Kingdom was scheduled with this latter group in mind.

I have recently seen portions of some great new IMAX films in the production pipeline and we're looking forward to programming these on the giant screen as they become available in the coming months.

Once again, thank you for your comments. We do look forward tom hosting you again soon.

Kindest regards,
Paul Wild

“Good to go when it's raining or too hot out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2013

We had never gone here before and was pleasantly surprised, (the architecture was in keeping with the Canadian BC Indians) with tall totem poles decorating the very talk ceiling in the lobby.
There were several choices to choose form, (we went to two different viewings).
The location is right down in the middle of the city so the location works. Take advantage of this attraction.
