Owner description: Completed in 1890, Craigdarroch is a stately home built by the pioneering couple Robert and Joan Dunsmuir, who at the time of its construction were the wealthiest people in British Columbia. Called a 'castle' due to its imposing exterior, the luxurious interior has been restored to look as though the visitor is a guest of Mrs. Dunsmuir during the 1890s. It features beautiful woodwork, unique Victorian artifacts, and an impressive collection of original stained glass, all within a pleasant walk from downtown Victoria.

“For a wet day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

We liked this more than we thought we would so were pleasantly surprised. However, I found the family more fascinating than the house itself (but then I'm a culture buff, loving places that are steeped in ancient history). I think a lot more could be made of that as part of the tour. There's certainly a book in there somewhere, too!

“Just Beautiful !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2014

This "Castle" was originally a house built by one of the distinguished families in the area. It sits just a block or two from the Abbeymoore B&B where we stayed in Victoria. The exterior is a lovely gray stone about 4 stories high. When first going in, you are greeted in a small round foyer for payment and a shoe brush to keep the floors clean. You then enter into the main floor where the oak woodwork is just AMAZING! You have to be able to climb stairs, I didn't see any elevator. There is restrooms but they are pretty "Antique" but functional. It adds to the feel of how people lived back in the turn of the century. The stained glass, furniture, paintings, musical instruments, bedding, clothing, and pool parlor were just wonderful. The view from the top floor is worth the climb. Each room has a story board telling what the room was used for or whose bedroom it was. If you enjoy history and old woodwork, you'll like Craigdarroch Castle.

This is right in the center of town. Easy to get into, good parking. It's really beautiful. Worth some time to see all the good stuff.

“Must-see!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2014

It's been about a decade since I've been here, but it's stuck in my mind ever since and I doubt it's changed much. Craigdarroch is basically a huge, incredibly fancy house straight out of the Victorian era. While exploring you learn all the history of the family who once inhabited this grand place, and it almost feels like they're still there. The website says it takes 45 minutes to an hour to explore but I'd suggest some extra time if you're like me and like to gawk at things. Definitely go here if you're in Victoria, it's quite the experience.

“Would Recommend Doing Once”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2014

We had heard this was a must-see on a trip to Victoria, so we took a few hours to tour the castle. It was more of a really big house (if you're used to the castles in Europe, this will seem small). It was interesting seeing the different "stages" the house went through, from private residence of the wealthy to hospital to college to conservatory to school board building.

We were expecting the whole thing to be displayed as it was when it was built, so when many rooms were completely empty, or displayed as they would have been when it was a college, we were surprised. We were glad we went, but wouldn't visit again on subsequent trips. If you have limited time, a trip to the Butchart Gardens would be a better time investment.
