“Great casual resto with lots of flair!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013 via mobile

Guu is a Vancouver institution. There are now a few locations but this is the original one and I think it has the most character. They have a simple menu (make sure you check the specials board too as there are always interesting options on!) but the food is excellent. And fast! If you sit at the bar, you can see everything being made in front of you and watch all the action which is great. They have good sake too. Casual and fun for a relaxed meal.

“Guu is guu'd!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

I sat at the counter with my friend and we had a good time watching the cooks work their magic. Every small plate was tasty. I would recommend coming here later in the evening if you don't want to go the day smelling like a BBQ grill! Overall, a great experience with quick service.

“== mixed feelings ==”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

This hole-in-the-wall is charming if you like basic and cheap.

The food (raw tuna, and deep-fried chicken and pork with a croquette) had little flavor. Others thought the taste was subtle and good.

Sitting at the bar, looking into the small kitchen, is pure entertainment, nice and warm on a cool day. The price was certainly right, less than $20 for lunch for two. We will try again; apparently there are more flavorful dishes.

“Busy and Noisy local place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013

We went to the Guu based on TripAdvisor reviews. We found we were the only non Japanese people in the restaurant. There were many young Japanese people drinking pitchers full of beer and eating a few dishes. They were not obnoxious in any way, but the place was so noisy we could not hear each other. We particularly enjoyed the tuna steak, although it would have been easier to eat had the chef sliced it thinly with a sharp knife. We pretty much had to tear it apart. The kobacha croquette was also one of our favorites. We are going to try and replicate it at home. We were less impressed by the octopus balls and the deep fried squid. This is a place you go to take in a special ambiance, not for a romantic interlude.

“Delicious and fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013

We read several reviews of Guu -- a Japanese tapas bar/restaurant -- before going to Vancouver and were delighted that this was in easy walking distance of our hotels. We tried several small plates that were all delicious. Favorite dishes included the Kimchi Udon and Kabocha croquette, Limited seating and most is around a bar/food preparation area.The boisterous and intimate atmosphere is appealing.
