“Fantastic place for Japanese food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

We ate here during our stay in Vancouver. The restaurant itself is very busy, no doubt due to it's popularity. As we were leaving there were a number of people lining up waiting to get in, so I am glad we got there early. There is a wonderful atmosphere with all exposed wooden beams inside the restaurant, and the staff all appear to be Japanese, or at least speak Japanese. The only downside I could find was that due to being such a popular place, it was absolutely full as anything, and was quite noisy. The food itself was fantastic- the best priced Japanese food we have ever eaten (Japanese food in Perth, Australia is pretty expensive). We loved the quantity of Sashimi which we ordered, and it was cut in such thick slices. It is definitely worth visitng this restaurant if you are a fan of Japanese.

“Fun and Good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012 via mobile

We were visiting Vancouver and stumbled on the Guu restaurant in Gastown. It is a fun place with a great energy. As you arrive they announce your arrival and welcome in Japanese. The food is good quality and we enjoyed the sashimi plate and the specialty meal of tuna and avocado in 5 sauces was memorable. the sake mojitos were delicious.

“Great fun and great food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2012

The atmosphere is so fun! Not for anyone that likes a quiet restaurant. The servers are fun and know the food that they're serving! I recommend the bibimbop (especially the pork!). The "salmon and his 7 friends" is a really good and very interesting dish. The shrimp and cod stuffed eggplant is soooooo good. This s one of my favourite restaurants in Vancouver! The prices are great.

“fun place - good, cheap food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2012

I guess you know a place is good when there is nil signage, difficult to find and there is still a line up at 8:00pm on a weekday. Sat at the bar as they estimated the wait to be about 45 minutes. We had a plum wine and sapporo (should have tried a cocktail based on previous reviews), although wine was delish. Put ourself in the server's hands and she brought out a spinach ball with a delicous sauce, ahi tuna (huge piece of tuna for about $8) and drunken mussels. All very good, if not outstanding, more than worth the price - left with a bill under $40. Fun atmosphere, you can tell the staff enjoy doing what they do.

“ok, but not as good as thurlow location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2012

I've been spoiled by the Thurlow location. This was my first visit to Guu in gastown and I don't think it lived up to the menu I've grown used to at the other location. On special, they had a VERY tasty black cod sashimi, but everything on the regular menu just seemed a bit less awesome than what I've come to expect. And I missed the elbow to elbow homeyness of the original restaurant.
