Four of us dined at the West Restaurant just over a week ago to celebrate our son's Birthday. We had heard some excellent reviews and were anticipating a top notch meal. We ordered oysters and the charred mackerel and spot prawns as an appetizer. The oysters though very good were tiny and the mackerel dish was miniscule and not enough even to get a decent taste. Additionally, it was supposed to be a hot dish and arrived at our table barely warm. For the entrees we had the tuna, sable fish and 2 duck. Portions were small, good but not stupendous, but again, all entrees arrived at the table just barely warm. We were starving by this time as it had taken quite a while to receive our entrees, so we didn't send the dishes back but ate them as they were. There was a tiny amount of vegetable garnish on our plates, but vegetable dishes would have needed to be ordered separately in order to get a decent serving. As a result, we were all left feeling disappointed and still somewhat hungry. On the positive side, the service was excellent and when we complained about the dishes not being hot, the cost of all the entrees including the mackerel dish were removed from our bill.
We would not eat here again for those reasons stated but additionally because the restaurant is expensive, and we feel far better value for money and superior caliber of food can be had at many other fine restaurants in Vancouver.
