I was tempted to give Vij's a 2/5, but, after some thought, I figured that to do so would be spiteful (i.e. a reaction against the rave reviews). That said, I am baffled as to why Vij's is ranked #2 out of 1680 restaurants in Vancouver. Why-oh-why?
It's not that Vij's is a "bad" restaurant, but it certainly isn't that outstanding. Frankly, I had to give my head a shake when I read that New York Times' food critic, Mark Bittman, considered Vij's "easily among the finest Indian food restaurants in the world". Really? Maybe it was in 2003, but, in my opinion, not now.
While my dining experience wasn't awful, it was by no means memorable. Certainly the atmosphere was pleasant, the service fine, and the dishes nicely presented; however, the food was totally BLAH. Although my dinner partner raved about his meal, I remained totally underwhelmed. Frankly, I've had better Indian cuisine in restaurants whose prices are a third of Vij's. Next time I'll avoid the line-up, stay home and tackle a Camelia Panjabi recipe.
