“Hard-to-find cuisine, good exemplar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2013

I have loved Malaysian food since I first visited Singapore in 1989. Unfortunately, in the city where I live there are very few opportunities to eat it.

But Vancouver, blessedly, is different. With multiple locations, Banana Leaf is only one of the Malaysian restos in the city.

While it's not the best Malaysian food I've ever eaten, it's very competent, with an extensive menu, a nice list of drinks and good service. The fact that it's always so busy seems to suggest that other people agree.

“I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2013

Delicious spicy food and good service made this restaurant worth recommending. You should like spicy food, but there seemed to be a lot of choice on the menu.

“Very good restaurant close to Holiday Inn Vancouver Centre”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

We had a delicious meal here on a Saturday night and shared main dishes with two other people so we could taste a variety of dishes. We are vegetarians (but do eat seafood occasionally), and, although this is not a vegetarian restaurant, there were sufficient choices for us. Everything was delicious. The food was not particularly spicy, but the dishes were tasty. Had we known, we would have asked for a little more spice. Service was good. We thought the prices were reasonable. The dining area was clean as were the washrooms. We did make a reservation as we had been told they fill up fast on weekends. If we are ever back in the area, we would definitely eat at the Banana Leaf again.

“Better than average best of the bunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2013

Being Malaysian I have pretty high standards for Malaysian food. I'm entirely unsure why a cosmopolitan city like Vancouver can have generally such poor Malaysian food but that might be because Vangroovy is a relatively small city. Malaysian food is spicy, incredibly complex and expensive to do right. Indians who might eat spicy instead eat Indian food. Mainland and Southern Chinese eat the garbage Cantonese bland food. Adventurous people might try Malaysian food but really, in a city of 1.2m people how many truly adventurous palates are there? This might go a long way to explaining why so much Thai food in this city should only be served to dogs.

So in brief, the Malaysian food here is not bad. Some dishes are done better than the others. Some are dumbed down for orang putih (carrots? tomatoes? GMAB). Roti, Laksa, Char Kuay Teow, Nasi Lemak, Kai Fan are good. Laksa could be a bit more spicy but toning it down is understandable. Curry Chicken and Sayur Lemak are a bit on the soggy side. Their Hainanese chicken rice is pretty darn good though. Prices are reasonable too which gives it pretty decent marks

“delicious and innovative”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

there are 5-6 restaurants of this name in the Vancouver metro. The foods are like fusions including Malaysian, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian and Indian. Not as hot as the true native Malaysian foods but are at good levels for average Canadians and Americans. A bit pricier but worth it. It was crowded in the evening of Saturday night but to go is available. Too many good dishes to name here. Try the ones with sea foods.
