“Lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

I had the lunch special at Banana Leaf of Denman, with lots of varied tastes in among our party of five. Among us, we had delcious spicy fried squid and several orders of roti as an appetizer. The green papaya sald is scrumptious. Several ordered fish / prawn dishes and were happy -lots of food.

“Great food in a very small cozy restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

This Banana Leaf is really small so getting in is always difficult, however once in you are treated to a kaleidoscope of flavours by a good selection of Malaysian dishes. Try their Fried Rice, Nasi Goreng which is pretty good. All of the curries are delicious and all taste different. Personally I like their Duck Curry or their Kari Ayam.

“Variety, Colour, Spices - a delight for all the senses”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

Hanging out in Vancouver with my friends, we found the small and colourful Banana Leaf and appetite in hand, we went in. We ordered all sorts of plates and decided to share them between us. What a great way to taste all sorts of meats, fish and vegetables. We had to fight each other off to finish the plates - each was a favorite for different reasons.
I found the food spiced just right, the veggies were crunchy and fresh, the coconut drinks fun (as I ate the inside of my coconut glass). We laughed and ate and had a blast. There were no leftovers.
The service was competent and knowledgeable and was able to advise us on a few adventurous plates which we enjoyed. I am now inspired to try to replicate these dishes at home.

“Snacks at full meal prices”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

We were stuck one night, wondering where we could eat. It was raining,
cold and damp. Well, I said 'there's the Banana Leaf Malaysian restuarant,
let's try that'. So we did that.

We ordered a spicy dish, one with lamb in it, but not the priciest
lamb shank, but another dish.

We ordered one dish thinking to share this, and 2 banana leaf rice.

The rice was about an average serving, maybe, but the entree was
small. While tasty, it was a small snack for both of us.

Even if we just had the whole thing, then it would not have
been a lot to eat, a small dish presented, and the total bill
came to about $30.00.

I just expect more ...as they say 'bang for my buck' than this.

The 'decor' was dark, (that's OK), ordinary, and the table
we had was gouged and scratched.

Lots of people were eating there, though, so maybe this is
just a personal opinion. But we both agreed we would
not return there.

A lot for a little...a lot of money for little food.

“Fabulous food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

We went here for a special anniversary dinner so decided to have the 9-course tasting menu with the accompanying wine samplers. The service was very attentive, and the pacing was just right. It was a cold evening so as soon as we sat down we were immediately served cups of hot water to warm us up, which we greatly appreciated. All of the food was wonderful. Especially amazing was the Beef Rendang. We had previously experienced another Banana Leaf location with friends who did the ordering. In comparison, the Denman location is smaller and the building is showing its age, but that added to the ambience. Although the restaurant was very busy and every table was full most of the time, we were never rushed and we never had to wait for service. It was exactly the kind of special celebration meal we had hoped it would be!
