Went here after a disappointing meal at a highly acclaimed restaurant up the street (Guu). This was the real deal, and, as most of the reviews say, fairly genuine and a great value.
Availability of tatami rooms, general seating and sushi bar, with genuine Japanese sushi chefs and waitresses. Clearly the crowd that was there was mostly Japanese and were very happy with both the food and the setting. In reference to one review, I'd rather have genuine Japanese servers and chefs with English challenges than any other way - and the menu was quite easy to understand and was straightforward if you're even a bit familiar with Japanese food.
The only negative was the edemame was fairly weak. But the liquor was good, the assortment of fish was above standard and I found the quality to be quite good. The value, particularly given what we had just come from - was fantastic.
Don't be concerned, this literally is a basement restaurant with a very pedestrian signage out front. We just went downstairs to look at it on a whim, and once you stepped inside you knew this would be good. It felt much like some of the restaurants you'd walk into as you walk down into a train station in Tokyo.
If you want Japanese food and are in the core of Vancouver, I'd be hard pressed to say there are better places for the money.
