This place is so crappy that you need to close your eyes and nose to get to your room without throwing up... Seriously, for the people who wrote good reviews on this hostel, I don't understand in ANYWAY how you could! The bathroom had stains and rancid everywhere, I wasn't able to take a shower, the kitchen is SO disgusting that I ate at restaurants everyday and the rooms aren't clean at all, the sheets are so old, maybe not even clean!!!! DON'T GO THERE unless you're forced to! Maybe the price is great, but even paying 5$ is too much for a night! The people are filthy and the location was almost scary, with homeless and poor people outside in the streets that ask you money each time you come out! We saw insects in the corridor, and the cleaning lady was washing the floor with water that smelled urine... Go anywhere else, but there. When I changed of hostel, I saw how much the Grand Trunk Hostel was crappy, it was my first experience in an hostel there, and the other hostels I've been since are sooooo much better!

This Hostel is cheap.

Its in an excellent location.

The internet connection was not very good, often non existent.

It seems as though it hasn't been decorated since it was built 30 years ago, however the friendly house staff do their best to keep it clean.

I would recommend for a couple of nights, especially for those seeking private but budget accommodation but not much longer, as there are better hostels in the area.

Oh dear. On 3 key criteria (location, price and free Internet) the GT stacks up well at first glance. However, that needs serious qualification. Though next to charming Gastown on one side, the GT also has Canada's smack district on the other - come or go the wrong way out of this place and you will feel unpleasant. The place itself is so dirty, mouldy in places, rancid in others, and with such poor facilities (we wouldn't dare enter the kitchen or our room's fridge) it scores very low on value. The state of the room and the lack of common areas certainly got us out early and back late. And the free internet was slow, off at 9pm, one vintage PC (possibly as old as the dial-knob TV in the room) and the Internet set up was Heath Robinson to say the least. Unless you have no other choice as it is Olympic week you should look elsewhere IOHO

“good location to walk, good spot to make friends”

Grand Trunk Hostel

I stayed there for a week and overall I had a good experience. I took a short course at UBC and I took bus#4 in front of door every day. And because of the course, I used computer a lot and basiclly the free wireless internet access worked very well. I also met several freinds there and on weekend I went to movie and played basket ball and went to bar with them and I had a lot of fun. $180 is the speical weekly rate for a private single room and I had everything all by myself and this is no doubt the best deal in downtown Vancouver. good stay.

“Do Not Stay at this Filthy Hostel”

I had the misfortune of booking into the Grand Trunk Hostel using Hostel Bookers website, Whilst the hostel is in a great location in Gastown, it is filthy dirty and the quality of the rooms disgraceful. The kitchens and bathrooms are so dirty you run the very real risk of catching something nasty. It is a cheap place to stay but not so cheap as to warrant the unpleasant and unwelcoming stay this hostel has to offer.
