The Parker serves up tasty vegetable-centric fare, a great wine selection and amazing desserts.
We went there for the first time to enjoy a pre-Valentine's romantic dinner. The space is small and a bit crowded, but has a clean, pleasant feeling.
Upon looking at the menu, we wished we could have tried one of everything. Between the kohlrabi with miso dressing, squash ravioli, chickpea fries and beet terrine, it was hard to make a choice. Thankfully, everything is designed for sharing. The food was all very tasty, enhanced by a glass of Thornhaven rose.
Dessert was the highlight of the evening. We ordered a gluten-free carrot cake and vegan truffles. Amazing. The carrot cake had a caramelly texture and creme fraiche glaze that elevated it to true elegance. And the truffles were creamy and delicious.
The Parker is good example of the current trend towards restaurants feature local, seasonal vegetables as the star of the show. The portions were small but rich, and although I was worried that I might have to have a "second dinner" when we got home, I ended up feeling decently full.
One of the nice things about the Parker is that they are vegetarian and (mostly) gluten-free, but they don't make a big deal about this fact. It's a good restaurant that just happens to accommodate a range of dietary restrictions. Although my personal attitude is to 'eat EVERYTHING in moderation,' I am very happy to find a new place to take my gluten-free and vegan friends. I'm also glad that the Parker takes reservations, something that is rare in Vancouver.
I will say that the portions are rather small for the price, so it isn't a place to go when you're starving. That said, we were pleasently surprised when the bill came -- it wasn't ridiculous. Due to the price and portion size, the Parker is a bit too rarefied for my everyday dining style, but it will definitely be my go-to place for special occasion meals when I need to know that I'll be able to get a table and accommodate friends' dietary restrictions.
We have since been back for more dinners and brunch and have always enjoyed the experience.
