“Food is decent, Staff is hit or miss.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

There was a day that Tentatsu was the best option for cheap, large portioned Japanese food in the Hastings Sunrise area. But restaurants have opened around them offering similar (if not better) food in recent years, as well as giving the one thing that Tentatsu lacks: service.

That said, however, I'm an honest reviewer and give every place a chance. Their food is fairly good. I really enjoy their Dynamite Roll, and they have some fun larger rolls to experiment with as well (the Spider Roll is good, for example). The sashimi is decent but sometimes a bit on the frozen side. The nigiri is, again, decent, but somewhat on the small end of the scale. I do like their tapas and mains however: one thing that I like from Tentatsu most of all is their Okonomiyaki. It's not something easily found (outside of Guu, that is), and both the beef and the seafood pancakes are delicious and different from the norm. If I do go to Tentatsu, I'm usually going for that reason (and the dynamite roll).

The environment is a little on the older/cheezier end of things, and looks a little grungy, but the tables are always clean. They do offer sake/beer and spirits here, which other locations close by do not.

Sadly I can't get away from writing this review without mentioning the service, which really is sub-par. I was a long time customer of Tentatsu (before a certain other location opened up just half a block away) and so after a considerable amount of time (and money) spent on the waitresses, they got to know me and warmed up a little. But in the time spent getting there, it really wasn't great. They aren't one for conversation, they tend to be abrasive and short, and sometimes it takes a while for them to get to your table. I wouldn't say that they are rude, necessarily, just not the most friendly.

They do offer delivery for orders over $20, which is how I prefer to eat from them. Can't go wrong if they bring it to your door, really.

Worth a shot but not a favourite.

“Too bad about the horrendous service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012

Visited this restaurant based upon mixed reviews from Urbanspoon. Should have paid more attention... Food was decent and okay in value, but the service from the Taiwanese/Chinese wait staff is horrendous!!! Mouthy lippy service by the front of house staff. Might I suggest to the owners to either hire new serving staff or send them for major attitude adjustment. I would suggest either takeout service (and I use the term service lightly) or avoid this place altogether.
