When my boyfriend and I want to take our Japanese food obsession up a notch, we go to Tatsu.
The location is small but really cute and fresh looking: cool artwork on the walls, great lighting, and even gorgeous presentation plates to serve the food on. Their service is usually pretty quick (although we have had to wait more than a few minutes on occasion: they do get quite busy, though), and the waitresses are always keen to fill your tea or water glasses whenever they get low. Friendly and attentive.
My gold stars go to Tatsu for two reasons: firstly, the quality of the food, and secondly, the presentation of the food. The taste of Tatsu's 'special' rolls is just brilliant. They really work with different flavours and ingredients, and if you're looking for a change from the standard house rolls or rainbow rolls that you'll find at most Vancouver sushi places, give Tatsu's rolls a try. I first fell in love with the Crunch Roll, but have recently moved onto the Volcano Roll; my boyfriend particularly likes the Red Tatsu Roll. Their tapas are also delicious; please make sure you order the Tuna Carpaccio. Melts in your mouth! And the presentation of everything is really above and beyond. They decorate your plates like one would decorate an art piece; they use fresh fruits and berries to add to the look of their rolls and make designs with sauces and sides. Honestly from the look alone, Tatsu makes me think of a very high end place, yet the prices are super reasonable.
Where you might eat for under $15 at one of East Van's other many sushi places, you'll land more along the lines of $20 to $25 dining at Tatsu, which is why we consider it a little more "special occasion" (case in point: I'm usually pretty broke!). But it is 100% hands down worth the couple bucks more.
