“Must try this place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

My favorite place to have lunch in YVR!

I have tried many dishes here and each time i am very satisfied.

The staff are friendly, almost too friendly sometimes, but they are trying to turn tables at this place as it is a very busy spot.

Great variety of spicy dishes here. If you have food allergies, please don't visit, for some reason the wait-staff has a hard time understanding what is in each dish and gives bad advice. It also seems difficult for the kitchen to hold out certain ingredients although everything is made to order. I have seen it happen twice on two occasions a patron (not myself) ask for an item to be held out due to allergy and it always comes per standard recipe, i have also seen the floor manager claim that the item was withheld even though it was plainly obvious the ingredient was present....

Super delicious and my first thought for lunch whenever in I am in YVR.

“Quality service onlyif you are a caucasian”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

The first time we visited Red Ginger with my family, we rarely got any service at our table. Kam, the owner went around making conversations with guest of other tables and even cracked jokes with each and every single table EXCEPT ours. Even those tables that were not so sociable, Kam took the effort to ask them afew times if the dishes were good and if they were ok or needed any attention. After he asked the table beside us, when we thought that he was coming over to ask us next, he SKIPPED our table and went over to the next table of caucasians!
Throughout the night, we did not receive any attention from him at all and not even once he came over to ask if we were all right. And yes, we were the only asian customers in the restaurant at that time.

When we were leaving the restaurant, we saw 2 Asians sat down and they also did not get any service at their table. Only Kam's wife went over to take orders and they were being left alone too. We thought we were being sensitive and visited the restaurant again subsequently but unfortunately, we received the same cold treatment.

We later read a couple of online reviews on other websites and found out that Kam did the same to other Asian customers!

I don't understand why there's such discrimination in the restaurant since Kam and his family are Asians? Food portions are huge hence value is good though. However, for us, we would prefer not to endure such treatments in return for saving some bucks...

“Good value and flavour in a welcoming environment!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2012

Followed Kam from his previous location in downtown Vancouver. Particularly enjoy the service, as we are greeted as "old friends" every time we go - and even speak to us with a few words in Spanish! Food is great also, good value overall.

“Large portions of generic North Americanized Chinese dishes provide OK value if already in the neighborhood”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2012

A couple of days before a Vancouver wedding in mid-February the bride- and groom-to-be arranged a get-together at Red Ginger for all wedding guests from out of town. For all of us, since we were coming from diverse points in North America, this was a good opportunity before the formalities of the wedding and reception to meet and greet other wedding guests whom we had never met before as well as to renew a few old acquaintances .

Red Ginger features Asian food. I.e., the menu includes a relatively extensive list of dishes based not only on Chinese but also Southeast Asian origin. This gave all of us an opportunity to order a wide variety of appetizers and entrees to try and share. As a group we ordered mostly “familiar” and also a couple of more “adventurous” dishes. Bottom line... all of the dishes, regardless of purported regional cuisine, basically came across as North American style generic Chinese dishes... heavy on sauces and/or coatings/dough which hid and disguised the taste of the featured ingredients. On the positive side, all portions were large or very large, tasted OK, and prices are reasonable.

Service was consistently friendly and attentive.

Ambiance was OK. That is not damning with faint praise... means clean, bright and not too crowded... just not above average.

All in all, a fairly good value proposition for casual dining if generic North American style Chinese food is what you are looking for. OK if in the neighborhood but not worth a detour.

“A great value!”

Don't miss a chance to be welcomed by Kam. He takes time to chat with and care for his guests and serves generous portions of incredibly tasty food.
