We have stayed at this hotel many times before and I love the Fairmont hotels,( especially the Chateau Frontenac - Quebec city, and Empress-Victoria.) We love beautiful historic hotels.
We have never had a problem at the Vancouver Fairmont before either. However-. this time we stayed one night in a Junior Suite, after a Christmas party. We weren't in the room that much before our party, but later on that evening when we went to bed we heard alot of talking from the next room to us (thin walls?) and for some reason a service -type door kept opening and shutting across from our room, which we also heard through out the night! Most rooms we have had in the past at any Fairmont Hotel are quiet, no problem. We did notice that this particular suite had the bed as soon as you walked into the room very close to the wall and entrance door, and the sitting area/tv room was a seperate room closer to the window. Maybe the configuration of our room contributed to us hearing noise in the hallway, but we felt the walls seemed thin.
Our check in was okay, but the staff were not very friendly except for the valet/car men, who were friendly and welcoming. After check in and on our way to the elevator, we went over to the dog they have in their lobby and the person who handles the dog didn't smile, look at us, nothing....no 'welcome to the Fairmont... the dogs name is..such and such'....nothing! Very unfriendly.
We had paid for another couple's room (jr. suite like ours) so we wanted to make sure all charges for them and ourselves were put on to our bill. Upon our check out early the next day,my husband was given the final bill which he paid for, but because we asked the woman at the front desk a few questions about some charges on our bill (which she clearly wasn't happy about) she called out her supervisor who was condescending towards my questions. The charges were correct- no problem. When we went to get our car and leave, the valet man told us that there had been quite a few staff changes the last 6 months. Maybe that is the problem, but their customer service -hospitality needs to be worked on. There are many beautiful hotels in the downtown Vancouver area. The Fairmont is beautiful and if you get a quiet room you will enjoy your stay, but alot of the staff we experienced were very unprofessional for that class of a hotel.

Wow, is the best word to describe this hotel. We ended our two week honeymoon tour of Canada at the Fairmont and it was fantastic. We wanted to end with luxury so booked a Gold room, not really sure what we'd be getting, but it was so much more than we could have expected. The gold floor is situated on floor 9 and you get your own private check-in desk (always friendly and ready to help you at any time), your own private lounge with free access to computer and printer, private kitchenette area where all hot/soft drinks are free (there's an honour bar for alcoholic drinks), canapes served between 5 and 7 each day (very tasty) and breakfast served in the private lounge (very good breakfast). This floor is like a hotel within a hotel. The rest of the hotel is still very impressive and equally friendly, but if you don't want the hustle and bustle you can sit quietly away from it all. Our room was lovely, a huge very comfy bed, robes and slippers and just generally luxurious - a perfect end to a perfect honeymoon really. The main bar area in the hotel was very nice and the perfect place to sit and relax after a days sightseeing, and it was nice to listen to the musicians as well. If we go back to Vancouver we'll certainly be staying here again.

We're a younger couple who thought we'd appreciate a couple nights' stay in this historic hotel. We were willing to shell out a little extra for what we assumed would be made up for in great service and a little piece of luxury. I guess their branding and price point (and these reviews) fooled us.

The room we checked into had a teeny window with no light, and it was very dank. There was a small TV and ancient mini coffee brewer. We might as well have been in the Holiday Inn. Pluses were: the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was nice.

Customer service was awful. Upon checkout, we were talked down to when we disputed several incorrect charges, as if we were the idiots. It didn't surprise us that they got those wrong, since on the first morning we were woken up at 5 am with a wake-up call we never requested. The guy on the line even questioned us rather than apologizing. We were so happy to get out of there.

There are plenty of other places to stay in Vancouver (new and friendly places like L'Hermitage) -- don't waste your money here.

There are about four hotels I try to book when I am coming to Vancouver on business. The Pan Pacific, The Fairmont Waterfront, Sutton Place (and the Sylvia if my parents are coming) and the Fairmont Vancouver. Of them all, this is my favorite. The Pan Pacific & Fairmont Waterfront have more stunning locations and the Sutton Place has a better business feel, but the Fairmont Vancouver is everything I like in a hotel.

It oozes Old World charm. It has the grace and elegance I look for in a hotel. Coming here feels like slipping on comfortable old slippers and an evening jacket.

The rooms are very comfortable and have everything you expect in a modern hotel. The dining is very elegant, a nice blend of Northwest & French. And Afternoon Tea is oh so civilized.

Pleasant is just the best way to describe it.

Stayed at the Hotel Vancouver in September for a pre and post cruise stay. The pre cruise stay was excellent, the room being bright and spacious and on a location looking down Georgia and Burrard. Check in was slow and we had the impression that there was "No room at the inn...", however we were allocated a room eventually.
Post cruise was a big disappointment, the room was small, dark and needed some attention. Looking at the emergency escape procedure map, our room was the smallest on the floor!!
The rest of the hotel was very good. On final day checkout we were given somebodies drinks/food tab to pay, but that was sorted fairly quickly.
Had the post cruise room being up to the same standard as the pre cruise room, we would have given it 5 stars, but it wasn't. so it has to be 4 stars, but a very good 4 stars.
