Description: L'Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver's first jail. Originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past. Set in a refurbished brick and beam building that combines classic French tile work with industrial fixtures, natural wood, and glass and steel finishes, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge setting, elevated dining room and plush, sun soaked atrium. Chef Lee Cooper and General Manager Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating and drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. French influenced West Coast fare is paired with Sommelier Robert Herman's eclectic wine program and an innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience. L'Abattoir adds to Gastown's bustling breakfast scene with a menu mixing comforting staples with hearty, unique entrees. Thirsty brunchers can sip on creative cocktails, as well as daily feature vermouth on the rocks. Non-alcoholic options include daily bottled house made iced teas. Just adjacent to L'Abattoir's regular dining room is the restaurant's stunning new private dining facility. The 1,200 sq ft. Facility features historical architectural elements complimented by a contemporary design aesthetic. While large enough for 50 people seated or 70 standing, the room retains an intimate ambiance and a noise-reducing barrier blocks out the hustle and bustle of the regular dining room.

“Fantastique!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

Great atmosphere, enthusiastic and friendly staff, and incredible food. Yes, it's a little on the expensive side, especially the wine, but what do you expect for the best quality? One of the best dining experiences in a long time and would return and recommend without hesitation.

“As good as the rating suggest!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

Party of 4 had dinner here. Had several cocktails, all were very good. Ordered 3 appetizers, 3 entrees and 3 deserts to share. Food portions were on the large side and thus was plenty of food for us. Had wines by the glass, nothing really spectacular. Wines by the bottle had very high mark ups. Highly recommended!

“Outstanding food, but service a bit hit and miss”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013 via mobile

This is an excellent restaurant, serving high quality food. Our main courses were excellent - interesting, beautifully presented, expertly cooked. However, our starters were delayed, spoiling the overall experience. Servers were helpful and friendly, and knowledgeable about the food and wine. It's got a great atmosphere, and a real buzz. Maybe we were just unlucky with the starters. I'd definitely go again.

“Delicious Food, Great Atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

My Boyfriend booked this restaurant as a surprise for our anniversary. It did not disappoint. We were greeted by a lovely hostess who showed us to our table (one in an alcove as we had asked for somewhere slightly quieter). We were introduced to our waiter and given menus. We were then given complementary glasses of champagne as they were aware it was our anniversary. Very nice of them!

We had starters, mains and dessert each, and all of them were delicious. The chickpea and pea samosa was great, scallops and pork belly and the lemon tart were all divine. There was a great atmosphere here.

This place isnt too fancy, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the menu is very reasonably priced (we have spent more in other places and not enjoyed it half as much as here). There is also a bar if you dont want to eat (although you'd be missing out). It was ranked at #2 in Vancouver on Trip advisor when it was booked, but but by the time we arrived it was at #1, and I totally understand why.

“Delicious unique dishes, trendy location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

One of my favourite restaurants in the world. The setting is great, right in Gastown - very trendy. It caters to the younger crowd, but the atmosphere of the place is relaxed and it just has a good vibe overall.
The food and drinks and top notch. The cocktails are very good, a must try, and the wine list was good as well.
There is a lot of meat, so this is a great place for meat lovers who are adventurous and not afraid to try unique foods, which are cooked to perfection. I had the veal sweetbreads with tongue for the appetizer and the pork shoulder cooked in milk for the entree. Both were absolutely divine.
The bread basket was also delicious!!!!

The service was very good, the waiters were attentive, knowledgeable and super friendly - probably the best service we have had in a long time.

The wait for the food was not long at all, and the price was better tahn expected.

Will visit again for sure!!
