We are big fans of Guy Fieri and Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives on the Food Network. Most of his episodes review US locations so we haven’t had the chance to visit anything but we make notes on some of them “just in case” we ever get to Minnesota, Texas or New York. One episode piqued our interest though and that was the one where he visited Vancouver, BC – that’s close enough for a day trip (from the OK Valley)! After dropping our daughter and her friend off at the ferry terminal on a recent mid-March Saturday, we headed into Vancouver with Meat & Bread on the GPS. We almost drove right by, even with “Samantha” directing us due to the current sidewalk construction and scaffolding on Cambie St but we got there. It’s a very small “hole-in-the-wall” with unique décor, a queue to get the looong lineup moving through quickly and one long table to enjoy your sandwich at. We stepped in the door and were greeted by the hostess, (not to mention the glorious smell of roasted pork!!), who helped us “newbies” get ourselves oriented. Not a big menu, they’ve got 3 regular sandwiches and a daily special – soup too – but, when it’s this good, a big menu just causes frustration in trying to decide! We both ordered the porchetta sandwich. They season, roast and slice the pork on site (no shrink-wrapped deli meat here!). WOW!! Great ciabatta bun, spread with salsa verde and sprinkled with cracklins – just FANTASTIC! So flavourful, so moist, so MMMM! You can even purchase a whole pork roast to take home (roasted by them or “take n’ bake” DIY). Check out the episode on YouTube (Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives – Meat & Bread – Vancouver). This may just become a regular Vancouver treat….
