“Excellent B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

My husband and I visit Vancouver a few times each year. We like to stay close to Commercial Drive as my brother and family live there. A few years ago we were so lucky to find this B&B. The location is perfect it's withing walking distance to all the interesting shops, bars and great restaurants on Commercial Drive. Also 15 to 20 minutes by Bus to down town Vancouver. The B&B has a beautiful garden where we have had many peaceful breakfasts. Malcolm is an excellent cook his breakfasts are to die for. The hospitality is the BEST!! Malcolm is very accommodating host and will make sure you are well looked after. The suite has all the facilities needed for a pleasant stay. Full equipped kitchen, comfortable sitting room and the most cozy bed possible. We fully recommend this B&B and we look forward to staying again this coming September.

We spent five nights at the Happy Garden B & B, and thoroughly enjoyed our peaceful and quiet stay in the large self-contained accommodation. Malcolm proved to be an excellent, knowlegeable, and friendly host who served up first class breakfasts of high quality foods ordered the previous day from a very interesting and attractive menu. The bed was extremely comfortable, and most welcome after our long flight from England, and subsequent long days of sight-seeing. The Happy Garden may not be situated in the City centre, but gives travellers the opportunity to see the 'real' Vancouver. We had the added bonus of being there when the nearby Commercial Drive, 'Italian' area was closed off for a day whilst a huge 'Italy Day' event took place. Wandering through it was great fun, and we enjoyed a really yummy pizza meal afterwards at a nearby restaurant. We made good use of the public transport, trolley buses and sky trains, and would recommend the purchase of day passes which are good value for money. The Happy Garden B & B is situated in an old building, and is perhaps a little 'frayed at the edges', but it is hugely charming, and we would most certainly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a peaceful and quiet venue away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area. We would most definitley love to stay there again on a future visit. It was perfect for our purposes. Thank you Malcolm!

My husband and i just got back from our vacation to Vancouver where we stayed at Happy Garden B&B. Our experience here was amazing. It is located in what we found to be the most eclectic and interesting neighborhood in the city. It was walking distance to great local restaurants, bars and shopping. Also close to the train and bus to get downtown or to other neighborhoods. Malcolm and Thecla's home was beautiful. The suite in which we occupied was a very quiet and private garden apartment. We had our own kitchen, bathroom, and living room, with a separate entrance. The bed may have been the most comfortable we have ever slept. Breakfast was some of the best food we had in all of vancouver. Malcolm's cooking is incredible. We are vegan's and were so excited to find a B&B that could accommodate our diet. I have no doubt that any kind of food he made would be great. Malcolm was incredibly hospitable and helpful with our plans while we were there. The perfect host. We loved Vancouver and we loved Happy Garden, this is absolutely where we will stay when we go back.

Where to begin? We loved everything about Happy Garden! The suite is funky yet extremely cozy. From the artwork and rugs, to the substantial kitchenette and fast wifi, we often found it difficult to leave our suite to go explore the city....not to mention the back garden and the deck! The location is wonderful; within walking distance to Commercial Drive, which is loaded with unique cafes and restaurants. But the best part of our experience was our wonderful host, Malcolm, and his talents in the kitchen - each day we could choose what to have for breakfast the following morning from a list of delicious (we tried them all!) options. We are absolutely sure that there is no better place to stay in Vancouver. This was our best B&B experience ever, and we have tried countless all over the world!

Is not, as in others B&Bs, only a room with a bathroom but an spacefull and cozy apartment with all the facilities to cook and make of our stay in Vancouver a great experience.
The bed was so comfy that it took us a while to get up after recovering from a 4 hours drive.
There are not many places that offers you a great choice of breakfast and the chance to have different breakfasts everyday (even Vegan).
Malcolm is a good man, great chef and a better host that likes to take good care of the clients personally.
The place invites you to have breakfast or a glass of wine in the evening, chilling out, in the beautifull garden. Is close to the public transport (bus number 20 and Skytrain) to get to downtown and there is free parking along the street and free internet. Is located in a quiet neighbourhood at a walking distance from ”the drive” which is an area full of shops and restaurants.
Far more than what we expected.

This lovely B&B provides a more personalized experience than other B&Bs we've stayed in. The spacious single suite is delightfully furnished and decorated (challenge: can you find the "off" switches to all twenty or so lamps before you go to sleep?) with a full kitchen, dishes, basic spices, and pots and pans, so you can easily cook up something or re-heat leftovers when you get tired of eating out. It's also nice to have a living room area where you can relax that's separate from the comfy bedroom. When it's nice out--which can be a rare event in Vancouver--the back garden is completely open to guests to relax in or eat.

Malcolm, the proprietor, is an excellent cook--and very versatile! This is the first B&B I've been to that offers three separate full breakfast menus--one for vegans, one for vegetarians, and one for everyone else. I'm a meat eater, and I thought my breakfasts were absolutely delicious--but even better, my vegan partner's breakfasts were equally excellent! In fact, if you're trying to eat more healthily, I suggest requesting the vegan or vegetarian breakfast menu--the food was just awesome (green banana crepe, anyone?), and definitely healthier than the average American breakfast. If you have other dietary restrictions, I have no doubt that Malcolm could easily work around them. The care and thought he put into making our visit successful was impressive!

My girlfriend and I only got to spend one night here at the Happy Garden, but it was a very pleasant experience from the moment we arrived until we left. Since we arrived in the evening after dark, we had a bit of trouble determining which home on the street was actually the Happy Garden. However, we were pleasantly surprised to see Malcolm, our host, come out and signal to us that we had arrived at the right place. Since we didn't provide a specific arrival time, it was an unexpected but nice gesture that he was looking out for arrival and welcomed us at our car. After offering to assist with our luggage, he kindly showed us to our room.

The room is very spacious with a full kitchen and a comfy bed that offered a wonderful night's sleep after a full day of touring. Our stay ended the next morning with Malcolm's wonderful breakfast of crepes (possibly the best I've had!), fresh juice and tea. Our engaging and lively conversation with Malcolm while he was making our breakfast only made our experience at the Happy Garden that much more pleasant and memorable. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a great B & B while touring the Vancouver area.
