“Charming home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2007

We couldn't have enjoyed our stay more. Everyone was so friendly, and they were able to accomodate our dietary concerns. Great location -- walking distance to Stanley Park, English Bay and many fine restaurants. We had the Peak Room, which takes up the entire former attic, for four days -- bright and spacious, with its own thermostat, so we were a little disappointed when we moved to the Mountain Room for our last two days -- even though it is charming it was much smaller. On site parking for guests. Spotlessly clean. We're looking forward to coming back.
-- Julie and Tony

  • Liked — Clean, beautiful furnishings (especially light fixtures), friendliness, location
  • Disliked — Peak room is a bit small, but it is also hot because it's over the kitchen and it's difficult to open the windows.

Waking up in the Beach Room with a great view on Barclay street, which is a beautiful, quiet lane with old trees was a wonderful start of the day. Followed by a tasty three course breakfast including fresh fruit, bakery and eggs, we couldn´t think of a better way to explore the city. Close, within walking distance of the most important sites, we thought no 5 star hotel could even come close to this personal, well-decorated bed and breakfast. Fully equiped bathroom, DVD-player (and a lot of movies to chose from!), coffee maker and fridge were very convenient. At the end of your shopping/sight-seeing day, the fresh cookies are a treat. Stop searching for other places, book a room right here right now!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Barclay House - I think it's the best BandB we've stayed in.

The exterior view on their web site attracted us in the first place and the reality was even better. The service was excellent, the room (well suite, actually) was great, the breakfast was delicious (especially the yoghurt), the décor lovely….

Our hosts were friendly, interesting and informative.

What more could you want?

Stayed at Barclay House for three days in the middle of March. The Garden Suite was perfect, private entry and very quite with very nice accomodations. JJ and the staff were outstanding. Breakfast each morning was phenomenal. Location in Vancouver is perfect and all the best activities are either a short walk or drive away. We have stayed in Vancouver several times and Barclay House was our favorite. I have already recommended Barclay House to friends and family planning on visiting Vancouver. It's perfect for both business and vacation stays.

We have just returned from a fortnight's holiday in British Columbia and had the pleasure of staying in Barclay House for three nights. It was absolutely first class in every respect; from the beatiful interior design, to the fabulous gourmet breakfasts and outstandingly good service from our hosts JJ, and Mette. The attention to detail was second to none, and we found it extremely good value for money.

Despite our late arrival due to a delayed flight, JJ was a most welcoming host, even though it was late in the evening, and we were offered a much appreciated glass of champagne, while he gave us the low down on what to do and see in Vancouver.

We stayed in the Beach Room, with its sumptious bed and wonderful furnishings. When the room was made up each morning, a daily supply of freshly baked cookies were left in the room - utterly irrestistable.

JJ also helped us to arrange accommodation in Vancouver Island for the latter part of our stay, and gave a first class recommnendation to Middle Beach lodge in Tofino, which was also fantastic.

If you want to be within walking distance of downtown Vancouver, but with the added benfits of being in a quiet leafy street, I would thoroughly recommend Barclay House.

The accommodations were excellent! All the rooms looked freshly painted and clean, although they retained the old charm of the house. We were offered a larger room due to one being available. The location was great! We were able to dine at a nice restaurant within a few blocks and made good use of the (included) parking space. We are looking forward to coming back for another (hopefully longer!) stay soon.

Having previously stayed at more traditional b&b's, Barclay House immediately appeared modern, contemporary and light. We arrived a little early, but staff went out of their way to rush the sorting of our room so we could settle in. When we got into our suite - the Haidaway ( which has its own private entrance at the side of the house) - we were amazed! Much bigger than the usual b&b room (but then you are paying a little more here), our room was more like an apartment. And a keen eye had paid meticulous attention to little details like contemporary Native American art, teamed with fashionable modern prints on the curtains and decor. And it helped that we had a private jacuzzi. And the champagne upon arrival was also very agreeable!

Cooked breakfasts were also very good - and they were very accomodating with my egg yolk allegy, making sure to prepare me egg-white variations, very kindly.

JJ, his sister - and in fact all staff - were friendly, helpful and couldn't do enough for my girlfriend and I during our stay.

Would throughly recommend - particularly to young couples wanting a romantic getaway.

  • Liked — The room - which felt secluded and spacious.
  • Disliked — Maybe the fact that room was so seperate, you had to go outside in order to come in to main building for breakfast in the morning - even in the rain.
