“Great location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

After arriving in Vancouver from Whistler and having a week of chilled out travelling from Calgary, my friend and I felt quite overwhelmed by the craziness of downtown and surrounding areas and we needed to escape! With a little help from the sat nav and the lonely planet guide book made an escape and headed for Jericho beach and the HI. The location was great and we stayed for 2 nights in a private room. We had a car and the free parking in the nearby road was great! We were lucky as the day we arrived there was an open day and we were treated to complimentary salmon BBQ! Access to downtown was easy whether driving or using public transport. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Very much enjoyed our stay here.

I stayed at this hostel a number of times over a period of nearly 3 weeks in Vancouver. First of the customer service is spot on - great! They are not only knowledgable at reception, I also found them to be pro-active in their attempts to give directions, advice and ideas I hadn't even thought of (and I'm a seasoned traveller!).

The dorms are spacious and clean, the beds are comfortable. The linen and bed quilts are some of the best quality I've come across for a hostel. One little issue is that the main light switch for the whole dorm is at one end where the entrance is. It would be helpful if they put it on timer and provided a 2nd switch at the other end of the dorm. There is a cafe downstairs that does a reasonable menu and sells beer, though disappointingly its little over priced for travellers on a budget. The kitchen is huge, plenty kit for cooking (no oven). They also have a movie lounge.

Although the hostel is not in the city centre this is still a fantastic location if you prefer peace and quiet, love the outdoors and the beach. Literally just 3 minutes walk from the nearest beach or if you enjoy walking, its about 45 mins stroll to Wreck Beach, which in my opinion is one of the best beaches I've ever been to for good vibe and atmosphere. Even the water is warm during summer months. There are other beaches much closer if you don't want to walk that far.

My only criticism is that the wifi is very temperamental and the signal is weak in the dorms... but then you are supposed to be travelling and having fun, not on your computer all day!

Overall, awesome customer service, friendly, comfortable, clean and fab location. I'm definitely planning on returning here and looking forward to it!

I recently stayed 3 nights in a private room. There is no soundproofing in these "private" rooms and the walls are paper-thin, Got very little sleep....it felt like the four private rooms were just one big dorm. On the first night, there was a baby crying at 4:00am which kept everyone awake and that was the end of my nights sleep (even with ear plugs!). The next two nights, it was people talking loudly and someone that kept slamming their door half the night with mad sprints to the washroom (I am guessing!). I would have slept better probably in an actual dorm room!! Not good value for $66 per night...paid $198 for what? I can stay downtown for $76 each night and actually get some sleep!! Phoning in to make reservations, the staff act impatient and bored with their job. The only good thing is the nice location by the sandy beach.

Room Tip: Don't bother paying for private rooms...stay in the dorms...you might sleep better.

We stayed here as a family during the summer. It was very busy, with a large group having some sort of retreat. It was very loud with no apparent quiet time at night. People were running up and down the stairs, down the halls, slamming doors and having a late night party on the front lawn. We stayed for three nights and did not sleep at all. It was hell.
The location is fabulous if you are looking for beach and hiking and a bit of an escape from the city. We loved the location.
Our room was not clean when we came in, so we left for a while, returning in the evening. The floor had still not been vacuumed.
The staff was very courteous and they seem to work hard. It seems they are understaffed and not equipped to handle a larger crowd.
The kitchen with so many people there was understandably dirty. There was one toaster, plugged into the same power bar as two kettles, so getting a turn making anything was a bit tricky.
This is a good place if you want the location close to a nice beach. The sleep quality was terrible, which means we won't be back, given that basic shelter is what we are looking for.

Room Tip: not on the main floor - too noisy

We were here off season - so we were the only group here at this time. It is far from town - but close to the University. On the water, but the water isn't much to play in. Kitchen is spacious and well stocked, restaurant onsite. Staff was very friendly and worked with us on group rate. We were in small double rooms, which were nice and peaceful. Group rooms were large and ....not something I would want to be in, but I'm mid30s. the 20somethings were fine in there. Bathrooms were large and on every level and had plenty of outlets. Great fridge space.

I was booked into HI Jericho by my tour operator and I wasn't happy. It is so far out of town and not even walking distance to restaurants. We had to eat at the cafe downstairs with a limited menu and a cook that did not want to take your order let alone make you anything (in between popping out for a smoke) took agessss to get our average meals. The setting was like an old mental hospital, very old and run down. Wouldn't go back

Peaceful.. out of the center of the city and the beach is nearby.. But the staff are a horrendously miserable crew. If you are hoping to have an online conversation with anyone lasting more than an hour for a sentence or two this is the place to stay.

The woman serving breakfast in the cafe could not have had more contempt for the patrons if she tried. Throwing utensils in disgust, slumping shoulders at requests, audible sighs etc. Leave your problems and your life issues at home dont bring them to work when people are looking at traveling the world each morning.

The internet does not work at all here save but for a tiny space in the lobby.. The same place that 30 other people are trying to either log on or check in..

THe sneering snobberry of the housekeeping stafff was a marvel too.. a simple good morning results in a mumbled reply and averted eyes .. as though a conversation with a guest might infect their social standing.. All in all a beautiful facility ruined by a miserable staff whose idea of customer service can only be derived from their collective experience as prison guards and security guards

Hi,

First, I must say sorry for the delay in my response. Secondly, I'd like to thank you for such an honest and insightful review.

Your review has since become part of our training material, and while I'm sorry that we certainly didn't meet your expectations (or mine) during your stay, we aspire to do better. I hope that your comments will help us to get there, since each new season we begin with new staff.

Shortly after your review, we began to make changes - changes in training and supporting our staff, and also changes to our operations. it became apparent that our cafe service was not meeting expectations, so we changed it. We changed the management, the menu, and most of the decor in the cafe to try and improve the services provided. Our cafe is now run by the North Shore Culinary School; a non-profit organization teaching students, who otherwise couldn't afford culinary training, the skills to re-enter the workforce. While I agree I'm biased, I really do think the quality of food and service in our cafe is now far greater than anything we've had before.

Our wireless situation is improving as we have made equipment and service provider upgrades, but we still realize that we must do more to meet the demands that we have been experiencing. We hope that this season, and with further guest feedback, we will finally find a more suitable solution.

Again, thank you for taking the time for your review.
