“Granville Island hotel is the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

The location is wonderful. The rooms are small but cosy. The sheets are lovely to sleep in. The market is right there for you to wander around in. You can take an Aqua Bus across to Yaletown and wander around.
What a wonderful place to spend a few days.

The hotel is uniquely situated on the east side of Granville Island, which is one of the major tourist attractions in Vancouver. Granville Island was an industrial area that was converted to tourism in the 1970's with a degree of success that has proved impossible to replicate in other parts of the city. It is now a collection of shops, restaurants, and marinas built around the hub of an amazing produce market.

The hotel is just at the edge of all this, on a relatively quite side of the small island. Its modest entrance gives a small boutique feel that hides the fact that there are more rooms that appears to be the case from the outside.

The staff is great and the rooms are top notch. The views are amazing of the city over the waterway known as False Creek. There are many beautiful yachts everywhere you look, including those moored right out front (unfortunately the slips are not available to hotel guests).

The only negative we encountered was that the hotel restaurant was OK but not great. Fortunately there are many others to choose from with a few minutes on foot all over the island. A spa would have been nice too, but there is a non-affiliated one very close by.

Room Tip: Take the 3rd floor with a water view.

Loved everything about the experience, location proximity to the market and short drive over the bridge to the city, excellent price, excellent amenities, beautiful water/city view, excellent restaurant and bar, friendly helpful staff. Will definitely visit again.

Room Tip: north side water/city views are spectacular

I have not stayed in the Granville Island hotel for a year or so. My stay this time was even better than before. The room was updated and upgraded, the lobby looks amazing, and the staff were friendly as usual. You cannot beat the location -fantastic restaurants within a short walk and the sea wall, for running or strolling, is right there. Overall - another excellent stay.

This is a funky little 'island' and this is a funky little hotel. Shows its age, but they're trying hard to stay current. My room was tastefully decorated in modernist tones. Quiet and comfortable. Granville Island is a fun place to see art/artisans and the public market is a great place to check out local foods. The hotel bar and restaurant seemed pretty dead when I stayed. You'd think, then, that the manager at the restaurant would not be so eager to kick us out the minute closing time struck - especially since we didn't mind them cleaning up while we finished our last drink and conversation. But no, she summarily booted us. No worries :-) Oh, and you better like the smell of beer. The bar is connected to a small brewery. Best part of the hotel are the views across False Creek of downtown.

I've stayed at this hotel several times and never been disappointed. The beds are so comfortable, the rooms are quiet. The amenities are a very nice touch. The location is perfect, right on the water with beautiful views of downtown Vancouver. I highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for a water view.

This has been one of our favourite hotels but this time fell really short of expectations. It gets three points for location, view and a bit of nostalgia for what was once a first class experience. Upon arriving the outside temperature was near zero, there was a biting wind and driving rain. The warmth and comfort of the hotel was eagerly anticipated. Unfortunately our room, 108, an executive suite, was about as inviting as cold, leftover soup. The temperature in the room was registering 14.5 degrees, about as cold as you can get. While we cranked the heat up we thought a hot bath and warm robes might do the trick but this is apparently an executive suite that doesn't supply robes. The bath tub itself had taken some sort of serious blow, the indentation an ominous black colour. The tiles up to the shower head also had black markings that were not natural blemishes in the pattern. It looked like mould to us. Some of the grouting was also crumbling and badly discoloured.
We thought this was something the hotel needed to know but the response was, at best, disinterested. Housekeeping and maintenance did take a look at the bath tub and tiles and were mildly curious. They had changed the heat system from an old fashioned wall affair to a new thermostat control but the heat still came through the original unit. It was quiet noisy when it came on during the night, enough to wake you up. It can't all be bad. Aside from the issues mentioned, the staff were attentive and helpful. The Dockside restaurant was outstanding and I'll review that separately. The proximity to the Granville market is a major factor and the view and ambiance a continuing delight. In summary, we really used to like this hotel. Maybe 108 just needs a major renovation.
