After looking on line at this hotel through various travel sites, my wife and I booked direct with the hotel because the rate was less (remember that they quote the rate in $ Canadian) and there was no cancellation fee like the on line sites have. We requested a room high in the building and received on the 21st floor with a city view on the corner.
Based on the room we stayed in I would guess that this building was once an apartment building. We were pleased with the appearance of the room. The floors in the kitchen and living room were cherry wood appearance laminate flooring, large tile in the bathroom, and Berber carpet in the bedroom. The kitchen was fully equipped with a “miniature” yet full size refrigerator, microwave, oven, range, dishwasher, and sink, with limited cookware, plates, drinking glasses, and flatware. The unit has a washer/dryer unit with an estimated 4 hour cycle time that we did not use. There was ample closet space, a love seat, coffee table, desk with rolling chair, TV in the living room and flat panel in the bedroom, table and 2 chairs in the kitchen area, and a nice view from the balcony.
The only negative really was the bed. It was comfortable and the sheets were clean, but the blankets were worn and did not appear clean. They were those foam type blankets. They really need to update them, charge $10 more a night and this place would be spectacular. While we are pretty particular about what we sleep on, we were not grossed out or anything, it was certainly detectible though. It was not that big of a deal really since it was quite clear that the sheets were very clean. Although the room was much like a condo, it was cleaned daily by the hotel staff. The fitness center was adequate, but could have opened earlier. It opened at 7:00 for my westward traveling jetlagged self. As it turns out I walked more than enough to not even have need of the fitness center though.
There really is not a bad location to stay in downtown Vancouver because you can get anywhere on the public transportation systems. They use a transfer system where you can pay $2.50C for all you want to ride in a single zone in an hour and a half (all of downtown is a single zone). For $9C per day you can ride unlimited to all zones. We did this one day when we knew we were going to cross to North Vancouver to go to the suspension bridge. I would not recommend a car as you will spend too much time looking for a very expensive parking place.
The hotel is located in the gay district called Davie village, but were it not for the rainbow flags indicating such, you would probably not know it as the area seemed to be as family friendly as any other part of the city.
Be sure to check out the Greek Restaurant Just out the front door to the South called Stepho's. It was really good and really cheap (less than $20 US after the conversion for 2 meals and an appetizer). Don’t let the long line fool you, the 30 minute wait will be worth it.
Also, be sure to check out breakfast inside the Market on Granville Island. It is a distinctive experience. Transportation is best left up to the ferry which costs $2.50C one way or $4C round trip and is within walking distance. You may also want to purchase several passes if you think you may go several times or have more in your group to save some money. That is the best way to get there…trust me it is not worth the walk.
