“Excellent location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2007

We booked the Tropicana after reading reviews on Tripadvisor and we were not disapointed. The hotel is in an excellent location on Robson Street in the centre of Downtown and has the added advantage of free car parking (if you can't get in at the side of the hotel, don't worry, there is plenty of room in the underground car park) It is within easy walking distance to Coal Harbour, Canada Place, and historic Gastown, and in the other direction it is a 20 minute walk down Hornby Street to the tiny ferries that go to Granville Island. A short car ride (or you could walk) is Stanley Park. There are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. Try Fog and Suds just a few metres up the street. It has a nice pub atmosphere and serves really good food.
We were pleasantly suprised to have a spacious suite on the 11th floor with ceiling to floor windows in both the sitting room and bedroom. The staff were very friendly and efficient and I would recommend the Tropicana as extremely good value for a city hotel.

i was a little worried about staying there because i thought it would be a bit dirty and dingy .
it was neither ! it is a little dated but it is very clean and comfortable .the rooms are spacious and perfect for a stay of more than one or two nights.
the staff was very friendly and helpful
the only drawback was that whenever we had the windows open the pigeons woudl fly into the room ...
otherwise it was a great deal for the money

  • Liked — the spacious rooms and cleanliness

We have chosen the Tropicana as our accommodations in Vancouver since
the mid 1980s. The location and reasonable price hooked us from the start. I must admit, when we visited in 2005 things were getting shabby and the maids forgot to clean our room but that is all in the past. This most recent stay was perfect in every way. The room was clean, the elevator wasn't terribly slow, & the staff was always friendly. And I have always loved having the full kitchenette. If you are not into cooking, give Hon's Noodle House a visit. It is right next door and quite the experience in Chinese food! Sure, the Tropicana doesn't have air conditioning, but hey, this is the 'Great White North'. Although it was about 80F. outside, a breeze was always
coming through the windows. If you are a light sleeper you may want to ask for an upper floor and / or room at the back of the hotel as Robson is a noisy place well into the night.

I stayed at the Tropicana with my wife, sister, and new baby during a two day stay in Vancouver recently. We found the staff friendly, the room functional, the location excellent and the price quite reasonable.

Reception were welcoming and were amenable to a early check in which was good since we had just come off a 20 hour flight. It was also easy to find on Robson near shopping and eating and the parking was free.

The rooms are quite worn and dated but they are spotlessly clean. The bathroom is a bit claustrophobic and bit hot and steamy. The bedroom was a reasonable size and the living room and kitchen adequate. The view from the 12th floor was great though.

All in all. Good.

A friend and I stayed here for a night prior to going to Whistler.

The location is great! Stanley Park is near by. It is right on Robson street. Our hotel room had views of both False Creek (in between buildings) and the nightlife on Robson street.

The building is worn. The Elevators are small. But the rooms, while dated, are reasonably big. There was a pull-out couch and a seperate bedroom w/ 2 single beds. I think we paid $99 US for a night (so Robson street for about $50 a person). In January the hotel was not very crowded. We were able to park the rental car on-site in the small cramped lot. I drove to the Grouse mountain gondola in 20 minutes. The airport was 20 to 30 minutes away (no Interstate connection).

There are much nicer hotels in that area, but if you are on a budget, this is a great find.

  • Liked — The location for the money.
  • Disliked — It really needs to be remodeled and I question the parking during a busy season.

The Tropicana in Vancouver, BC is in a great location. Walking distance to Stanley Park, Granville and all the shopping on Robson.

The hotel is a bit run down - but the rooms are very clean and comfortable. The rooms are very large with separate bedrooms and kitchens. I was traveling with my daughter and we felt very safe in the neighborhood.

The service was very good and if you are looking for a bargain hotel - it's a good place to stay.

We stayed for 2 weeks in May 06. We had been anxious before arriving having read some alarming reviews. Thankfully, these proved unfounded. We were in a corner room on the 11th floor which gave us fantastic views of both Robson Street and the mountains.
The room was a great size and gave us breathing space especially as we were there for 2 weeks. It had a large living area, a small but fairly well equiped kitchen, lobby area and bathroom with overhead shower (bathroom had a hairdryer). Plenty of storage space. The cleaning staff came in every day and will change the towels each day if you want.
The pool, in the basement, was clean and we used it most days without any problems. Other facilities included an on site laundry room and sauna.
The staff were very helpful.
Yes, the building could benefit from upgrading but it was clean and well serviced. It is very well located (2mins from the Landmark Hotel but not at their prices). We got a great deal for our fortnight and more importantly would return again and recommend it to our friends.
Classed as 'above average' considering location and price.
