If you've scrolled down this far, you know you are not looking at the Ritz.
A funny thing happened reading these reviews. We traveled to Vancouver in July 2004. We made our reservations in April 2004, and when I checked this site almost all the reviews said the Sylvia was "...fabulous, charming..." But the reviews that have come in after our trip are more on the mark.
When I walked into the Sylvia I thought "This place is a dump! What were those reviewers on TripAdvisor thinking?" Then I saw the room. It was a dump too. I told my wife "When we get back to California I am re-reading those reviews. Maybe I missed something."
The reviews I just read that were posted after our trip in July 2004 are really more accurate than the reviews from 2003 or early 2004.
The Sylvia has a great location and a low price. You can walk to Stanley Park, the restaurants on Denman Street, Granville Island, and even to Gas Town. Walking on the beach at sunset, across from the Sylvia, is one my best memories.
But the hotel itself -- get real. This place was a dump forty years ago when they bought the cheap furniture and carpets, and they have not been cleaned since.
If you want the best location in Vancouver and don't care about anything else, this place is for you. If you want someplace special with romantic memories, keep looking and pay more.
BEST RESTAURANT IN VANCOUVER
On Denman Street to try the Banana Leaf restaurant. It is one of the best places I have ever eaten.
