“Sub-par for the price”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2007

My fiancee and I stayed at the Renaissance Harbourside as an interim stop between Whistler and Seattle. Because it was ranked so high in Trip Advisor, we thought that it was a safe bet for a good night's sleep. Not the case! We booked the room the same afternoon we stayed - payed around $230 CAD, $200 american. We were "upgraded" to a harborside room, which had 2 connecting doors to the rooms on either side of us. We were subject to babies crying, people talking loudly on the phone, tvs blaring all night.

Additionally, the rooms in this Renaissance are old, worn and not worth the price tag. If you can get it cheaper, then maybe stay, otherwise there are many more hotels in Vancouver with nicer appointments, better locations, and thicker walls.

My summary - dated, smelly, old, family tourists, etc. Avoid because you have the choice.

Great hotel, staff was very friendly and helpful. I arrived at 11am, and they gave me a room right away, and I also they allowed me to check out at 2pm. Is that a customer oriented environment or what?
The concierge was very knowledgeable and gave us an updated map, and also suggestions of places to go.
Will definitely stay there again.

Tip – In gastown there is this bar-restaurant called “Black Frog”, it is a must go when in Vancouver. Not to far from the hotel. Perfect ambiance and food.

Previously we had enjoyed a harbor view room at the Westin Bayshore. However, on this trip we noted favorable reviews of the Renaissance in TripAdvisor and lower prices at this hotel.
We were extremely pleased with our room. It directly faced the harbor and had a balcony of a type we hadn't seen before. The sides of the balcony were floor to ceiling concrete and there were sliding doors both for the front and back of the balcony. This meant you could extend the room's heat into the balcony in the winter.
The hotel, however, is one row of buildings back from the harbor and public shoreline. One tall building currently blocks a small portion of the harbor view and a second building is under construction--how much this will block harbor views remains to be seen.
We did experience construction noise after 7:30 on some weekdays from building going up; however, the double glass sliding dors of the balcony minimized this and we were not bothered by it. Overall, the hotel was commendably quiet and the room doors did not clang shut with as much noise as most hotel room doors.
Actually, the hotel is directly opposite the piers where sea planes take off and land; the planes make a bit of noise but we greatly enjoyed watching them.
The internet situation is quite good. Rooms have wired internet at $15.95 a day, but wireless internet is free in the lobby. (That fee also includes free local and long distance calling for Canada and the US.) Also the hotel's business center, open 7-24, has two computers and a cable to hook up a laptop, and is free, altho you can't always count on finding a free machine.
The hotel staff was very friendly and service oriented, more personal than the larger Westin Bayshore.
The location of the hotel is quite good.
Parking is $19 a day. However, it seems that the Vancouver car rental companies that service both the airport and the downtown area don't charge if you rent at the airport and drop off down town or visa versa, even though this is not apparent from their websites. (Check with each company.) Taking advantage of this we only rented a car for 3 of the 8 days we were in Vancouver minimizing our car expense since the hotel's location is perfect for walking around the city and there was usually a taxi waiting at the hotel entrance.

I stay at the Renaissance usually once a year, and I've to say that as much as I enjoyed it 4 years ago, today it's not the case anymore.

The hotel's location on the waterfront is really cool (nice view of Grouse mountain). Ask for a high floor and the waterfront for the view and the noise of the water-planes that take off/land in the early morning. There's a new row of building being built between the hotel and the waterfront, and it's been going on for years (i.e. noisy all day long).

The hotel itself needs to be refreshed. It's becoming really oldish and the room rates don't match anymore with the quality of the hotel. Breakfast is good but the menu hasn't changed in years.

As a Marriott member, I expect great things from their hotels. This hotel had excellent service and views, but lacked on decor and cleaning. The staff was very helpful in suggestions of nearby things to do and getting around. We had to change rooms due to a moldy bathroom, but this was done quickly. Both rooms need to be updated. I must say the beds were the most comfotable I've ever slet in though. If you don't mind the prices, both restraunts are excellent choices. The hotel is within walking distance of Stanley Park and Robinson Street. We had a baby, 2 year old, and 5 year old in tow and never had difficulty in finding things to do. I might also add the hotel provides a playroom beside the pool. I reccomend this hotel for families and the business traveler, but not for those looking for modern luxury.

Hotel has friendly service, with the doorman, desk clerks and housekeeping all seemingly happy, helpfull and warm. The rooms are a bit dated, though they are very clean and well kept. But the best part of the stay was the bed. It was amazing. I want one like this at home – I don't think I've ever had such good sleeps.

Just returned from a sunny weekend in Vancouver. Hotel was gogeous and the service was impecable - from the valet to room service to the desk clerks. Our room service orders were brought up quick, our room was cleaned and stocked with ease and every staff member we encountered had a smile.

Kids were thrilled with the indoor pool and hot tub and the fitness room was well equipped. Not busy at all.

Our room over looked the harbor where we could ships and boats and sea planes taking off and landing. Two comfy beds, with fluffy duvets and the softest pillows I have ever laid my tired head on. Hotel location is in a safe neighborhood with a quick walk to Canada Place and Gastown. We even hoofed it back from Robson St but I recommend that unless you have more comfortable shoes on than I did.

Not a lot restaurants close by but since it is in the business district, we expected that. We ordered room service twice, once for a late snack to go with a movie on TV and breakfast one morning. (a hearty "Canadian" breakfast so big that my kids shared) Ther were kind enough to send up a ice bucket and wine glasses so we could enjoy a bottle of wine we bought during our shopping outing.

The previous review about the poor service surpises me since we were treated so well. With such a large group bombarding a restaurant, not sure what they would expect. Overall, it was lovely stay.

Stayed September 2006
