This hotel is only a few blocks from the Seawall, great restaurants, and the Convention Center. We had a great view of the harbour from the eighth floor. I was able to check into my room early and had asked to be situated away from elevator noise, etc. The desk clerks were quite able to meet my needs. Later in the evening, I requested a refrigerator from Joel in housekeeping and he brought me one 5 minutes later. I was stunned at how quickly he was able to provide this service. Lolita from housekeeping checked on my room since I had just checked into the hotel. She provided me with additional towels for guests who I was expecting the next day. She was very efficient and thorough in the help she provided as were all of the housekeeping staff throughout my stay. They were able to provide us with more coffee cups, glasses, toiletries, towels, etc.
Alex, the concierge was exceptional in giving me information about the activities I planned for each day. She was very knowledgeable about the sights, in addition to the public transit system. I had received some information from desk clerks as well. She mentioned that the seabus would be a more fun experience than to use an ordinary bus. It was a very quick ride but much more enjoyable. I was able to participate in several free events...the Latin American Festival in Gastown on Sunday, July 7th and there were free outdoor dances at noon in Gastown during the Dancing on Edge Festival. The Wobble Tops gave a great performance as well as 25 Contemporary Gestures at the Steam Whistle Clock. I also explained to Alex that I was map challenged. She actually wrote out the directions and gave me a detailed explanation verbally and through body language how to find the activities, restaurants, etc. that I would be looking for. She even knew the name and location of one of the gift shops that I wanted to return to later that day. Grouse Mountain was a 20-25 minute ride from nearby and I zip-lined there. There were other activities as well such as a bird of prey show. I loved going to Stanley Park where there are two beautiful beaches and many trails. In addition, Lynn Park where I hiked the canyon, viewed waterfalls and walked along the free suspension bridge was a great time.
My last evening I went to Granville Island's Community Theatre musical, Avenue G.
It was great fun and the actors' performance did a great job. It seemed to be rival the Broadway version according to one member of the audience. Earlier in the week my friends and I had taken a tour of Granville Island, enjoyed the Farmer's Market, shops, and art galleries.
Back to the hotel: I did have some maintenance issues that were resolved by Manuel. He did a good job correcting the problems with the hotel pay per view movie. I had some other maintenance issues that were taken care of too. Bryan Watson, Assistant Operations Manager was able to meet my needs regarding the problems I encountered during my stay. He deserves a special thanks from the Renaissance Hotel for his willingness to help make a customer's stay a worthwhile experience. I would recommend the hotel to others. This hotel's price is reflective of the great location and the highly skilled staff including the bell men who also were helpful in giving directions.
One negative is that there is a charge for wifi in your room. It is free in the lobby, in coffee shops nearby and Urban Fare. Urban Fare is a high end grocery that provided us with many fruits, snacks and breakfasts throughout our stay. They also have some healthy choice meals at the restaurant.
Vancouver is a beautiful city and the hotel room at Renaissance was maintained very well. The Fitness Center was much larger and had more equipment than most places I generally stay.
