This restaurant is situated directly on Granville Street in the heart of Downtown Vancouver. It is relative hidden among other bars and restaurants close to Robson Street. And it is one of the very few Japanese restaurants in Vancouver that is really under Japanese management with Japanese chefs and service personal.
Remarkable are already the greetings: all available staff is lining up at the entrance to welcome the guests. At the first look it has a very humbled interior. And also the menu was first disappointing to me since it didn’t contain such a wide selection of dishes as I am used to in other restaurants. Also, a lot of standard dishes were missing. A lot of the offered dishes appeared to be a bit experimental. Nevertheless my and I tried a variety of dishes:
Tako Wasa (Wasabi leaf marinated baby octopus on cucumber served with miso paste) was highly delicious. It could have been more.
Beef Asparagus (Fresh asparagus wrapped in thinly sliced beef. BBQed with our secret sweet soy sauce) was the only dish I found not so well done. The beef was the only thing that could be tasted. The asparagus was visible but not to taste. This was a bit pity.
BBQ Whole Squid (Ika Sugatayaki - traditional robata style squid from Japan); Everybody who tried grilled squid knows, how difficult it is do get it very done. Often the meat is like rubber, hard to chew. Or inside is a slimy liquid. This served squid was perfect. The meat was tender, the taste was great, not too burnt. We really enjoyed that.
Chicken Donburi (Rice dish with chicken topped with egg, onion and a dashi soy sauce) was extremely delicious. I never had thought that I would be able to enjoy such relative simple dish so much. The taste was well balanced and the chicken meat was more than perfect. I have never had such degree of tenderness and taste. It was really great.
And the service was also absolutely caring. I watched how the manager in person gave some guest some advice to change their order when he realized that they would have made a kind of double ordering of some dishes. I have never experience such caring staff.
And also just to mention: the soy sauce was not served in a standard bottle but in a small ceramic cannikin.
This meal was really perfect. Although the price was a bit higher than usual, this was really justified by the location, the quality of food and the high level of service. I am strongly recommend this restaurant.
