“The kind of place you want to stay in”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013 via mobile

Extremely friendly and welcoming - within minutes of coming in the door, Ken had made us feel at home. The house is quirky and full of character and things to look at, and definitely for those in search of something more than hotels offer. Think of it as staying at the home of friends, but don't go expecting modern perfection. The lovely eclectic mixture of battered 1920s dressing tables and items from Ikea add to the "shabby chic" charm and fit in well with the Victorian building.

Shoes off at the front door, and clean up after yourself in the kitchen, it is like going to stay with friends.

After our first visit passing through Vancouver, we immediately booked for the return journey later in the week. We both loved it. We'd love to come back some day!

Janine and Ken were great hosts, beautiful rooms, easy access to everything in Vancouver,
we stayed in the suite on the top floor of the guesthouse. It had a very nice bed quite comfortable cutely decorated. Located just a few blocks from the Gaslight district. we walked to a couple of restaurants on water street not to far away. Diffidently a great time and totally recommend urban hideaway to all our friends.

we stayed in a twin room for 3 nights in october, it was a wonderful place to stay. great location, great house with everything you could want. would definitely stay there again and recommend it. it is not for people wanting to party, but a quiet home away from home. breakfast was all supplied you just had to cook it in the lovely kitchen. wonderful experience.

Room Tip: we stayed in a twin room, it was basic but good.

I would not stay here again. Both the owners were very kind and hospitable, but the accommodations were very lacking.
The front door was VERY hard to find, steep stairs lead to actual 'house', unusable front 'porch', tiny kitchen that guests have to use simultaneously (ie make your own meals) - decided to go out and eat most mornings.
Slept in back bedroom, very noisy (breaking glass, slamming doors, lots of stagnant night foot traffic).
Shared bathrooms was not as easy as stated. One of the two bathrooms smelled like sewage when you take a hot shower - not the smell I want to wake up to in the morning.
Very easy to access downtown, great physical location, but could have stayed two blocks away for the same price.

We stayed five nights at the Urban Hideaway, in the Loft room, which was very comfortable, with lots of space. Janine was very friendly and helpful. There was home made yoghurt, muesli and fruit for breakfast with juice and good coffee - or you could cook eggs if you wanted - and we met interesting people with whom we exchanged information and stories while getting breakfast. The location was great - city centre, but a small friendly place that wasn't an anonymous hotel. We loved it, and would return if we go back to Vancouver.

Room Tip: The Loft room is large, with a private bathroom and toilet but is at the top of the house. It was go...

We stayed on our last night before heading home to Australia. I chose it for the location and that was spot on. You can't go wrong for access to transport and downtown amenities.

We had a second floor room at the back, comfortable and quiet. Sharing the bathrooms wasn't an issue.

The kitchen is big but not set up for everyone to be there at once (only four chairs at the kitchen table), and there were six of us in there trying to make breakfast.

My only disappointment is that there was no other common space except the outside balcony.

Ken/Janine sent us instructions about where to get off the city bus from Horseshoe Bay, and the walk with our backpacks was a doddle, except for a small linguistic misunderstanding. 'Across the park' means 'across the street from the park'. Oh well, a little exercise is not a bad thing.

I chose Urban Hideaway as the place to stay when my mum came to visit me in Vancouver - i wanted somewhere for her to be able to hang out and relax, but that wasn't too pricey and still in the heart of downtown and close to everything....check, check and check. The historic house is a rare find, virtually hidden away and yet still one of the most conveniently located accommodations in the city, being less than 5 minutes from Waterfront station where all the transit lines, the seabus and many buses start. It is also a walk from Gastown, Chinatown and Yaletown and an eaasy bus ride to Stanley Park or Granville Island. The rooms are homey and comfortable, individually decorated with everything you need. We stayed in the loft room, which is the only ensuite room, although the shared bathroooms are but a few feet from the guest rooms and spacious and spotless. Most rooms also have no cable, but there is an epic collection of DVD's to watch for an evening in. Although hanging out and chetting to fellow guests is the general idea, as the well stocked communal kitchen is open for anyone to use most of the day and there is space to store your own food. Breakfast is included, which you make yourself and which includes, cereal, home made yoghurt, bacon and eggs, toast with a variety of toppings and of course tea and coffee. The hideaway is the home of Ken and Janine, who are adorable and happy to help with anything, they are around much of the day, as are their two cats. All in all a well-priced, comfortable and convenient place to stay and i would reccomend it.
