“Great value for money!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2011

It is not actually a real B&B, but you are provided with the necessary to prepare breakfast by your self. I think it is one of the best solution in Tofino: you can use the kitchenette to prepare your own meal (and of course save money). Very clean and location is great. Price comparated to other accomodation in tofino is very low.

Although this style of accommodation suited us, I can understand how some people feel a bit miffed at this accommodation being described as B & B, where you might imagine a comfy room with a hot breakfast being served to you. This accommodation is not like that and was really a little self-contained apartment on the ground floor of the owner's house. There is a small bedroom with 2 single beds that you push together, a little bathroom and a kitchen/diner/ sofa/TV area. It's all quite smallish, but caters for what 2 people need for an apartment style stay, and the host is absolutely charming. Breakfast for 3 days was delivered to our room and consisted of muffins/ bagels/ jams/ eggs and carton juices which we kept in the fridge til we needed them. Quite satisfactory, but you see what I mean about not being the traditional B & B style. The host gave us loads of information and advice about what to do in the area, and tips as to which tour company to use and who she got a discount with. After that, we were left alone to use the apartment as if it was ours and we had total privacy. There is a great view out of the window and the location is perfect for a walk in to town or the pub for a drink. I did think that the price was quite high- but I think this applies to Tofino generally. It is only because of the price that I would not recommend it- otherwise- it was fine.

For $120 we had very poor accommodations. The owner (wife) brought is into the room and began telling us about the activities in Tofino, then showed us the bagels, apricots and eggs that she stored in the refrigerator for us to make ourselves in the morning. She wrapped two days worth of breakfast on a plate covered with seran wrap. Meaning she was done with us from that point on. Then she says with her credit card machine in hand, "I will give you the key once I have payment". Wow. Manners anyone???? That is not a B&B! First problems is a B&B serves breakfast, not leaving bagels in the refrigerator. Second problem was the place has no charm, it is very plain, the towels are at least 10 years old with bleach stains on them and the bed is hard. They also don't come in during the morning to make the bed or check to see if anything is needed. Those are the basics in a B&B, that's why people stay in them. A fresh warm breakfast and room cleanup/service. So disappointed. We aren't picky people, but really feel we were ripped off big time.

What a lovely time we had- enjoyed the distant harbour and Meares Island views. Very well appointed for the price and the hostess was so gracious and thoughtful.

Sand Dollar is well equipped and very clean. Though is is quite compact there was enough room for the two of us. An easy walk to the village. The owner was very friendly and helpful.

Stayed here for three nights in July (08). The owner was very friendly & helpful - she even picked us up from the bus depot in town when we arrived on the bus from Victoria & dropped us off again for our return journey.
As we didn't have a car we wanted somewhere within easy reach of town and were very pleased with the Sand Dollar. It's in a very quiet road off the main road by "surf sister" and not far from "Jamies". The nearest local transit (flag) stop for the beach bus was opposite "Jamies" (& they'll drop you at Jamies on the way back if you ask).
The accomodation was spotless. We had the bedroom made up with twin beds which were very comfortable. The bedroom is small, but there is a cupboard/wardrobe for your stuff and we didn't come to Tofino to lie in bed all day! (Their website has pictures which give a good idea of the size of the accomodation.) There is a shower-room with shower, handbasin and toilet; and a lounge/diner with kitchenette (2 electric rings, fridge, toaster, electric kettle, coffee maker, microwave and all necessary cutlery etc), sofa, TV, and table and 2 chairs. If you do have a car there is parking outside.
Breakfast goods (eg orange juice, a selection of breads, spreads & yogurts - something slightly different every day) are left in the fridge for you so you can eat at a time that suits you.
The price was just can$120/night in total (came in at GB£60 total/night), which I thought was outstanding value especially in high season.
We bought groceries in the local co-op and made sandwiches for lunch. One night we ate in the suite the other 2 we ate at the Schooner on 2nd (recommend the "mates plate").

We also went on a bear-watching trip with Mike from Browning Pass and had a great time - I would highly recommend it.

I thought the Sand Dollar was a great place to stay, especially if, like us, you don't have a car. It's also good for those on a budget.
