“HOSTEL IS NOT A HOTEL”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2011

Ecolodge of Tofino must have used a set decorator for their website, because the place itself is bare bones, no soap, shampoo, tissues, tv or radio and minimal furnishing. The promised breakfast was cold oatmeal after which you are required to wash your own dishes.
Shoes can also not be worn in the house.
We felt totally misled already upon arrival but too tired to search for alternative accomodation, much to our regret, the next morning when we encountered an exterminator upstairs in the rooms wearing a Hazmat suit

“Straight up, an excellent choice.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2011

Our stay here was during the early spring, when camping out would still be a little damper and chillier than I would enjoy. Because it was the off-season, we got our very adequate little room at the Ecolodge for $90 a night, not including tax. We felt fortunate to get this because of the insanity that Tofino has exploded into.

The upsides of this place were the price, the great breakfast, and the comfortable removal from town (and being closer to the beach). That said, cheap means cheap, and this remains a hostel, NOT a hotel. The rooms were pretty spare and tiny bit gritty (sandy beaches nearby, so can hardly complain), but the real issue is that the building is pretty much made out of tissue paper. Conversations and other noises can be heard right through the walls, which means that if somebody gets up at 6 to get an early start on the road, you might as well too. The rooms, for this reason and others, weren't so great for relaxing in. But you're not going to Tofino to sit in a room, are you??? Overall, a great place with delicious muffins.

***Also, if you get an offer of a guided tour of the garden, take it! There was a whole lot more to see there than was apparent from the little maps.

Room Tip: All the rooms are simple and cute, but if noise is going to be a problem for you, ask for a room on the top floor and AWAY from the bathroom/stairs... the banging doors and flushing toilets can be pretty constant in the morning.

“Great Hostel, More Like a hotel !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2011

Great place to explore Tofino, Its a great place to stay with a family Because of the gardens around the hotel and the Darwin Cafe and the two Dogs Peter and Griffin. In the hostel there is an kitchen were the guests can cook your own food, although a 'eco' Breakfast is included in the price which is great. Although its a around 30 min walk in to tofino central but its still a great place to stay !

Room Tip: The Family room has a ensuite bathroom all others are communal up stairs is Female down is male. rooms on the right have a garden view

“Great value for your money”

My husband and I recently stayed at the Ecolodge for the weekend. A great property - very clean and well maintained. At only $145/night and a hearty (delicious) vegetarian breakfast included, it was a pretty good bargain for Tofino. The walls are a bit thin....it could just be that I had neighbours with fairly loud voices, but there is quite time at about 10pm, which everyone observed. Also, our window didn't have a screen, so if you keep your windows open at night and you have the light on, you can expect a couple of moths visiting your room. We were able to rent a room with private baths, so we had to use the common bathroom facilities. I would've preferred a private bath (but that's just me), however, I will say that the bathrooms were always very clean. What made our stay enjoyable were the grounds - the botanical gardens and paths through the rainforests to the coast were gorgeous - and the staff. Very friendly, personable and accommodating.
We would definitely stay here again!

“Wonderful stay, friendly hosts, and a great base for exploring Tofino.”

The highlight for our first visit to Tofino was staying at the Eco-lodge. Owners and hosts George and Josie were very welcoming, fonts of local knowledge and passionate about protecting the environment, and running a sustainable business. Great coffee (finally after days of undrinkable stuff along the way) at their Darwin cafe, and the breakfasts (the lodge works as a B&B) were healthy and delicious. It's a bit like a luxury hostel, very family friendly, and the staff were all wonderfully informative about the local environment, things to do and places to go. The botanic gardens are worth a visit in their own right.

Repeat visit - absolutely
