Not realizing accomodations are an issue in the Tofino area this time of year we thought we were pretty fortunate to get a room for the night a few days before our stay. I opened the door and walked into a horrible smell of a moldy, musty basement. I was sure I was on ground level. This odour was supported by my wife and my kids who immediately said, "dad, it smells like old people". No offence to our elderly. I told the young girl and elderly lady, who I assume was the owner, the problem with the room. The elderly lady accompanied me to the room and denied smelling anything. She said it smelled fine. I told her 4 other people didn't agree. She said the carpets had just been cleaned 2 days ago and the room was clean. I told her that was the problem, the carpets had not dried. I also noted the back patio door was open when I initially entered, I realize now it was to assist in drying the carpet. I also believed that was why this room was available, TOO SOON. At $228.00 (tax included) I was not happy and requested another room - no other rooms. I was told it was not her fault, I asked if it was mine?? I was told I could call other resorts. I went to do that and the room had no phone. I was then expected to drop who knows how many quarters into the payphone. I asked for her assistance in calling around and she made one call and told me the area was sold out. I asked for a reduction in the price, she asked me for a new price and I said $100.00. She said no. I told her the room, with its smell was a $20.00 room not a $228.00 (tax included). It was the stinky room or we all sleep in the truck. Kids were tired, wife was starting to cry, I was prepared to sleep in the rain forest, with a better smell, but decided to keep the family happy and suffered.
I will never return to Tofino again, it was a horrible experience. It is a black mark on our otherwise wonderful west coast tour. GOOD LUCK ORCA RESORT!!
