There are actually two galleries, one in Tofino and another in Ucluelet. This review is for the one in Ucluelet.
The galleries showcase original works from over 200 individual Vancouver Island and British Columbia visual artists and crafts people. There are works of both established and emerging First Nations and non-Native cultures.
This is a consignment art gallery, selling on behalf of the artists. The price is established by the artist and no discounts are offered. This is how the gallery ensures that the artist receives full financial recognition for their work.
I bought a carved turtle (symbol of long life) bearing a copper shield. The owner was very informative as to the significance of the use of copper by First Nations people. The gallery offers world wide shipping and as the turtle was quite a large piece, I had it shipped home.
As I was about to leave the gallery, I noticed some glass display plates in the corner. One really struck my fancy, with musical notes, a piano, and a saxaphone on it. As my parents were in a small band (mother played piano and father played saxaphone), I bought it as well and had it shipped along with the turtle.
The owner is very friendly and easy to work with.
