Beautiful architecture in a wonderful setting. A very modern rendition of rustic with an almost Quaker simplicity to the accommodations. Others have sung the praises of the Lodge, so I'll relate some of my disappointments.
We came from four days at a "cottage" on the Sunshine Coast that was more like a fully equiped vacation house including its own canoe and runabout. I expected the accommodations to be a bit less generous in the single cabin at Middle Beach, but was a bit suprised at how spartan they were. We were three adults, and I expected things to be a bit tight, but it turned out to be unworkable, so we took an additional room for one of us.
The single cabin has a queen bed in a "separate bedroom" and two single beds in a loft up a steep ladder. The loft has very limited headroom and the beds were of much poorer quality than the queen down below (one of the mattresses had a plywood board between it and the boxspring). The single bed was a source of a backache after a few nights. The loft really is only appropriate for kids. The main floor bedroom was separate, but really felt little more than screened off from the other living area since sounds carried undiminished throughout the compact cabin space. The unit had no closet, and an efficiency kitchen that was fine for making lunch, but would have been challenging for any dinner preparations. All in all, the unit felt about the same as a large hotel room with sitting area and table. Most of the cottages are grouped together on the headlands, little more than 15 feet apart. So while they share a spectacular setting, and have been carefully placed to maximize views, they afford little in the way of real privacy or seclusion.
The additional room was taken at the lodge at the beach. It has been described accurately by other reviewers as very small. The room was very simple with queen bed, sink next to the bed, no closet and just enough room for one person to walk around the bed. Two people in the room would require a very carefully planned dance to move about.
The queen beds in both units were comfortable and the furniture and other amenities in the room were of high quality. Nice breakfasts are included and the dining areas and public lodge areas are beautiful.
It's a lovely place, but it is a whole lot more resort hotel than private cabin or cottage.
