“Lovely lodge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

The lodge is in a beautiful wooded setting overlooking the ocean built in a craftsman style. The rooms are clean, comfortable and cozy and set up to enjoy a day in the rain from your room or out on the beach. The bed was comfortable with luxurious linens. It had a small but efficient kitchen for those who want to do a little meal preparation. My only recommendation is a more helpful and professional staff would be nice. If you don't have a car be warned they don't serve dinner Sunday and Monday and it is a fair distance to a restaurant.

Room Tip: They are all good

We were blessed with amazing weather when we visited Tofino, which made this place all the more magical. The views from our room, from the lounge, from anywhere were stunning! This place is very special, you feel pampered but not in an over the top way. Breakfast was delicious, free coffee and tea whenever you wanted it were perfect. The sofas and armchairs just begged to be sunk into to enjoy a drink, a chat, the view. My only regret was booking a room with a hot tub on the balcony. We never used it as having come from a part of the island suffering from water shortages, we couldn't justify filling it. We just didn't need it. We ate in the restaurant on our first night (half price for kids which makes it reasonable). The food was great! It was also great at SoBo where we ate on our second night. It took us 24 to stop missing MBL when we arrived at our next destination - impossible to beat!

We were so impressed with this place particularly because it was a great price and included a delicious breakfast and warm cookies every night. If you don't need a TV in your room, and you're cool with a basic room, this place is perfect!

My husband and I went to MBL for our honeymoon seven years ago and have been coming back every year since. It is truly the highlight of our year, and probably responsible for maintaining our marriage through multiple family crises and child-related hurdles. We love everything about MBL -- the rugged, breathtaking views, the relaxed vibe, the ocean air, the fantastic food and easygoing service, the rustic rooms, the crashing ocean waves outside our door. We hold our breath every year, thinking this will be the one when the curtain falls and the getaway magic disappears. But it stays and stays. I hesitate to even share this review because the hordes will arrive and we'll have to book our annual forays even sooner. But then again, how can we keep such a wonderful gift to ourselves? Enjoy. We've travelled all over the world and nothing comes close to this carpet ride. Nothing.

Room Tip: Ocean view (side rooms) are just as nice as ocean-facing and offer a bit more privacy. The a la cart...

I live in Oregon, and have visited the coasts of Oregon and Washington many times since we moved here. Tofino is now my favorite non-tropical beach area.

Middle Beach Lodge is located on a bluff between two beaches. There are a lot of other beaches in the area that we didn't have time to visit as we were only here for two nights (not enough time - when we come back it will be for longer).

We got a middle room in a sixplex. It was smallish, but comfortable. The view from the balcony was spectacular.

The breakfasts were really good. I've seen reviews here that say it's limited, but I think it's reasonable given the size of the property. The baked goods seemed to be made on site.

We had dinner at Middle Beach the first night of our stay - crab night. The food was really good, and they came around after we finished our crab and asked if we wanted a second one. (Would this be a stupid question :) )

The common areas in the lodge building are beautiful and very comfortable.

While Middle Beach is really nice, I would agree with those who say the staff has some issues. When I called to make the reservation, the person I spoke with seemed rather scatter brained. Very nice, but very disorganized. When we arrived, we had to work our way around a staff member skateboarding down the access road. The housekeeping could have been a little better, and I was not happy that the housekeeper left the door unlocked.

Along those lines - I would strongly suggest to management that they spend the money and put some decent commercial grade locks on the doors. Yes, you're not in a high crime area, but the lock on our room wasn't even a decent grade residential lock.

The major failure of Middle Beach is technology. If you're going to have Wi-Fi, install a system the provides good signal quality throughout the entire property and uses current security mechanisms. When I was walking over to Middle Beach, I walked through the Lodge at the Beach part of the property, and it had great Wi-Fi (as well as decent locks on the doors!) Spend the money and provide this for the entire place. Next, the phone system. Our housesitter left us a fairly important message, but the message light on our room phone didn't light. Fortunately, she emailed me and I picked up the message. There were over 15 old messages in the voice mail box for our room, as it seems that nobody clears out the mailboxes when you check out. Also, the front desk staff couldn't tell me how to delete a message, and there were no real instructions in the room about the operation of the voice mail system. I did finally figure it out, but really!

Would I go back? Yes, I will definitely return, but I hope some of these issues will be addressed before then.

We had 6 adults sharing cabin overlooking MacKenzie Beach. My wife & I have stayed at the lodge previously. Our daughters and their husbands rounded out the group. It was over 15 years since daughters last visited Long Beach area. First time for one husband on the Pacific Ocean. They were all impressed with the facility, location and amenities. The lodge and cabins are nestled in among the trees and have stunning views. We enjoyed one of the lodges' dinners. Food was excellent. (Also have eaten here at our previous visits - food continues to amaze - highly recommend). Lodge/cabins being on the headland allows you to enjoy both beaches (Middle & MacKenzie) for walks and exploring at low tide. The relaxed buffet breakfast allows early risers and not so early risers to get a good start on the day. There is a good selection of cereal, fresh baked goods, eggs, yogurt, fruit and excellent coffee. The cabin was clean, private, spacious for 6 adults and the beds very comfortable, even the pull out couch my wife & I used. We were entertained by eagles right from our cabin balcony and the soothing crush of waves from the beach below. We are already planning our return trip. The only low point was the internet signal. It is very weak/intermittent at our cabin. We had to go to the main lodge for consistant signal.

Room Tip: All cabins very nice. Some have eastern view, others more westernly. Stayed at Middle Beach Lodge...

This is a lovely place as many reviewers have pointed out. We stayed in room 30, one of the "Headlands Suites" in the "Lodge on the Headlands" (one of the two main lodges). This was large, very comfortable room, with great views out to sea, and over MacKenzie Beach, and with a balcony shaded by pines. Middle Beach, to the other side of the headland, is few minutes walk away, and effectively private, with access only through the hotel grounds.

The main lounge in the Lodge on the Headlands is exceptional, being really comfortable and relaxing, and again with great views. The continental breakfast is served in the adjacent dining room: the quality of the breakfast is good, but the choice is quite limited. We opted for dinner in the Lodge on two evenings: as they make quite clear, this a set meal with no choice (unless arranged beforehand). The fish on both occasions, particularly the salmon, was very good.

However, Middle Beach has a significant flaw (at least when we were there in late July): the service. The place seems to be run with the minimum number of staff, and, while superficially friendly, they appeared inexperienced and uncommited. There are lots of signs of this: dealing with my booking on the phone was a bit amateur, our room was never refreshed until about 5pm each day, the breakfast seems planned on the basis of minimal preparation, and those on reception did not seem very interested in guests (for example, nobody asked whether we enjoyed our stay or whether they could help). There was no sign of anybody being firmly in charge. In a chain hotel, these factors wouldn't be surprising, but give the prices here,it is disappointing.

Notwithstanding the service, all the great features of the hotel mean I've still given it a 'very good' overall rating.

Room Tip: Room 30 (see above) is an excellent, but expensive, room.
