My husband and I decided we needed a little get-a-way not too far from home. I was checking the Tofino/Ucluelet area and stumbled upon the Long Beach Lodge Resort. I read many reviews here and once I saw their "Fall Frenzy" deal (every room for $169/nt) I was sold. This is a steal compared to their summer rates. I booked a Oceanview room with King Bed for 3 nights over a weekend.
We checked in about 1 pm on Friday and our room was ready. This hotel has an unusual lay out. We literally had to walk through the kitchen area (where servers pick up food) and through the fire doors to our room. We were always walking by plates of food waiting to go out. I felt like were going through some back entrance - but no - its the way in to the rooms on the 2nd floor (same level as Great Room). That said, once we were in our room it was beautiful. A little balcony with 2 chairs, a gas fireplace, 2 comfy chairs, a desk, our bed. The bathroom had a jetted tub and stand up shower. There were robes, raincoats etc all provided. There was a nice selection of teas and coffee (no creamer ever).
The great room is just as the picture shows on their website. It is also their dining room. We had the continental breakfast each morning and each morning it was exactly the same. Muffins, croissants (delicious), breads, rice krispies, granola, yogourt, fruit salad, fresh melons, cinnamon rolls (dry) and some pastries that were way too sweet. It was not a bad continental breakfast. You could also order from the Great Room menu for hot items if you wanted to at additional cost. I think a side of bacon was $2.50 or something.
My complaints are about the service. I expect more for the price. Maybe I expected too much? I don't know. What I do know is the evening we ordered dinner in the Great Room our waiter gave us very slow, unattentive service. We had to ask for the bill twice. He never offered a 2nd drink. The food was okay.
We ate the last night in the dining room (for a special evening). Our waitress didn't know what they had on tap (she said it was her first night back from vacation). She reached across my plate to re-fill glasses. She didn't clear plates timely. Our entrees were about $40 each and my meal didn't have much flavor. I have to say it was the worst meal (and most pricey) of the weekend. AND the most ANNOYING PART was later that evening in the great room (same room pretty much). We returned an hour or so later to play a board game and enjoy our last night. It was a Sunday so it was very quiet. We had the same waiter as the other night. I ordered a tea and my husband a coffee. We sat and played for maybe 90 minutes. The waiter NEVER came back - EVER. Not to ask if I wanted more hot water or if my husband wanted a coffee refill. I figured, since he never came back, that the coffee and tea must be complimentary (since I could have made it myself in the room for free) so after sitting there for quite a while we got up to leave. The waiter caught me at the exit with the bill. wow.. Now he remembers we exist. And it was $3 for each for the tea and the regular coffee.
The location is beautiful, the great room is beautiful, the room was beautiful. The service leaves much to be desired. Maybe it gets better in the on-season when they charge more? I don't know - but I have no intention of finding out.
I just want to add that I dislike people who are never satisfied and do nothing but complain. I don't mean to do that in this review. We had some fabulous meals in Ucluelet that were a wonderful surpsrise (Roman's Pizza and Blueberry Cafe).
FYI - No hot tub if you're not in a cottage, no room service, no spa - we travelled into Ucluelet for massages.
